OK, can we all agree on one thing? Roy Gill is an absolute genius. With "Blood and Fire," he's written the perfect 50th anniversary celebration of "Dark Shadows" -- a tale so true to the original spirit of the series, but so new and delightful, that it's a thrill to behold. It's everything a DS fan, new or old, could hope for, and everything that the late and lamented recent big screen version failed to achieve. This guy is a keeper, and I hope he continues churning out new DS episodes for years to come.I'm writing this after my second listen to "B&F." I was simply too overwhelmed by it after the first turn to express my thoughts. But tonight I am even more impressed by the audio's complexity, its attention to DS lore, and -- yes -- its utter sense of fun and invention. It's an instant new addition to the DS cannon.Of course Roy didn't do it alone. Producers David Darlington and Joe Lidster, and directors Ursula Burton, Darlington and Lidster deserve kudos as well. Without their efforts this range may have died a lonely death. The entire Big Finish team has preserved and progressed a beloved franchise, and its fans are so grateful for their work. The cast, once again, delivers outstanding characterizations. Everybody was grand. That said, I was particularly impressed by Daisy Torme as Abigail, James Storm as Abraham (note to BF: Can you cast Jim in a leading role he deserves, instead of a cameo in which he's quickly dispatched? He is too good to waste!), Andrew Collins as Joshua, and Nancy Barrett as Isobel. Lara Parker gives us a bravura performance as Angelique; her work is consistently excellent, but she's superlative in "B&F." And what can I say about Joanna Going? I loved her as Vicki in the 1991 remake.
