I was in the audience when this album was recorded in the mid 1970s at the University of Maine so I am somewhat biased! The other Bert and I albums are recorded without an audience and so somewhat dry. You have to provide the laughter in them. This album was recorded in front of a live audience which really adds to the humor. As a novice to Bert and I humor at the time of the recording, I didn't understand why the audience laughed and applauded at the beginning of each story instead of at the end. But today I've caught up and have all of Marshall Dodge's work and smile at the beginning of each story. I have his work on vinyl, cassette, and now CD. I have given away many copies to friends and have introduced many newcomers to Bert and I. The stories may be getting old, but every once and a while, I need a shot of Bert and I.
If you aren't buckled over laughing, less than 90 seconds into this recording, you are probably a child, or you aren't human. This live recording is a classic. I've been waiting for years for it to come out on CD.These stories, told in the character of a time-weathered Maine lobsterman, are brilliant tales of exaggeration, and surprising turns of phrase. This lobsterman is able to tell colorful stories using few words, and therein lies the genius. Every word is carefully chosen to maximize the comic effect. And yet the stories seem to naturally flow, as if they are being made up on the spot.Marshall Dodge's timing, and his commitment to his characters, is impeccable. If you buy one Marshall Dodge album, make it this one. His others are funny too, but hearing him live, and doing such a fantastic job, is an amazing experience. There is no other form of humor that matches that of Marshall Dodge. The older you get, the funnier it gets.
This collection of tales of the late Marshall Dodge was recorded at the University of Maine in the fall of 1977 and is a treasure to have on CD. In traditional "Bert and I" style, these tales do not knock you over the head, rather build gently and climax in a chuckle. I don't understand how anyone could suggest that the stories are not funny, or somehow inferior to earlier (vinyl) recordings. Highly Recommended.
This is a live album and shows the absolute genius of Marshall Dodge. The story about his mother-in-law and the lobster traps would make a corpse laugh. If you have a sliver of a sense of humor you will love this.
I grew up listening to the Bert and I stories in New England. At family gatherings my Uncle would re-tell the stories from the old original vinyl album. Having them on cd is priceless. Listening to Marshall Dodge live in front of a crowd makes the stories even funnier. If you have never listened to "down-home Maine humor", or if you have heard these stories once upon a time, I highly recommend this cd.
