Anna Wang, the heroine of The Year of the Book, returns in a new book with a new problem to solve....Make that two problems to solve.The biggest concerns 15-month-old Kaylee, the baby sister her parents adopted from China. She's a sweet little darling, everyone loves her, BUT she is a very finicky eater. Not only is she underweight and not gaining, but she's actually starting to lose weight. Her parents are worried; Anna is worried. Since she did not appear to her parents to be underfed back in the orphanage, the assumption is that some difference between there and here is causing the problem, but what could it be?The lesser concern is that Anna has to come up with an idea for a science project, but Anna doesn't have any idea what to do except that she knows she doesn't want to do something straight out of a book that has been done over and over and over, with absolutely certain results, and she wants to do something that matters.Anna and her two best friends and classmates Laura and Camille spend the first two thirds of the book going back and forth about what to do about these two separate dilemmas and then the last third on the Solution. In the process they learn more about the Scientific Method than most of those who report to us about science seem to grasp and more about the value of human interaction than some scientists seem to grasp, in the process telling a charming and heartwarming story. Patricia Barton's beautiful illustrations provide the perfect accompaniment to Andrea Cheng's wonderful text, and I'm apparently going to have to track down yet ANOTHER prequel to find out how we got here!
