As a devoted reader of Poe, I've seen numerous Hollywood versions of his tales on film over the past 50 years. Most disappoint a true lover of Edgar Allan Poe's timeless, terrifying, and fascinating gothic horror stories. After listening to a generous number of his poems and stories, as brought to horrifying life by Basil Rathbone and Vincent Price, you will never enjoy them more! These actors were childhood favorites of mine as I always enjoyed the more Macabre entertainments. Their perfomances, on these reasonably priced CD's, are flawless. I felt as though Poe himself was reading and delightfully scaring the hell out of me! You won't need chainsaw murders, blood, and screaming adolescents, if you give these incredible recordings a chance. Nevermore! will be the theme of my next Halloween Party (for adults only) complete with fog from a machine, low lights, stuffed Ravens, and Basil Rathbone's amazing reading of the poem on the stereo.
This is narrated by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone. These guys are the greats. This set has all of Poe's best including the House of Usher, Tell Tale Heart, a Cask of Amontillado , the Raven....say never more.
How can you beat Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone reading Edgar Allan Poe? I don't think they can be beat. I love this disc. My son took it from me because he also loves it. These guys know how to read. A proper reader adds so much to the presentation and the stories and poetry. These are powerful presentations!
I bought this for my granddaughter, who loves Edgar Allen Poe, and she's happy with it. It came in a hurry and is in perfect condition.
Classic Poe read by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone. If you don't know either of those names, start Googling. You won't appreciate how completely perfect the Poe/Price/Rathbone combo is without knowing who all these people are. Rathbone's The Bells is perfect; by the end I really did have chills. The poetry is beautiful. The performances are romantically haunting. This is the best way to experience Poe.
Poor audio. Bought to listen in the car. Cranked the volume all the way up and still could not hear it above normal road noises. Nothing wrong with the player-I've listened to recorded books for almost the entire 75,000 miles of this vehicle and this is the first time I've had this problem. Poor engineering?
This CD is a big hit. Unabridged Poe and magnificently spellbinding. Brilliantly retold by masterfully storytellers. It will not disappoint!
Classic stories but sound is off. You must listen to this in a quiet place not in a car I a road trip like my husband and I tried to do. Also I wish there was a brief intro to each story. They all start so suddenly. Otherwise I hope to fully enjoy it someday!
