This is not a bad book for young readers trying to learn Chinese, given the poor selection of bilingual books available online. The content is not particularly exciting but the illustrations are clear and it does what it set out to do (teach colors). Please note the characters are traditional and there is pinyin in the back of the book but not on the pages themselves. This makes it more suitable for older children with a lot of Chinese under their belt and/or native Chinese speakers learning English.
Disappointing.Love the idea of bilingual Chinese-English book, there really need to be more such options.However, neither the pictures nor the "story" hold my kids' attention. The drawings are simplistic and just ok, and the story is almost nonexistent. More than that, the words go back and forth between fairly hard/high-level words and really, super-easy, so I just don't know who the target audience is.
Cute illustrations but the vocabulary used is not language that is used everyday, such as names of plants (honeysuckle/peony). I'd rather more relevant, everyday content. Same thing can also be said for it's companion book "Hurry Home, Hedgehog". I won't bother buying any others from this Author/series.
My children received this book for Christmas as a gift, and so far, we love it! Finding children's books that use traditional Chinese characters (instead of simplified) has proved difficult for us. We speak Cantonese in our home, so the included translations and pronunciation in the back (in Mandarin) aren't very helpful to us. That said, that is not a complaint - finding Cantonese materials is even harder than finding Traditional Chinese!I love that there is Chinese on one side of the page layout, and English on the other. It helps me to guess at characters I haven't learned yet. *grin* Overall, a great addition to our Chinese library.
Good book, and it will work for me. Some of the words are not particularly useful Chinese words for a learning speaker and reader (i.e. honeysuckle and peony). I got it as a book to teach my kids some color words and maybe a few object names. It is fine for the color words. There are just more useful object names to learn in my opinion than some of the ones used in the book.
I wish the colors were more vibrant so that it is clear what blue looks like.The last page has the phonetics to match the Chinese characters, which really helped with the reading.
too far below scale of language introduction I wanted. I had bought another children's book, and it offered more translations and phonetic pronunciations than this one. Too slight, maybe it's for toddlers.
