Nazi gun fire can only mean one thing...The Germans are closing in. And twelve-year-old Anton knows his family can't outrun them. A web of underground caves seems like the perfect place to hide. But danger lurks above the surface. Ruthless Major Karl Von Duesen of the Gestapo has made it his mission to round up every Jew in the Ukrainian countryside. Anton knows if his community is discovered, they will be sent off to work camps...or worse. When a surprise invasion catches them off guard, Anton makes a radical decision. He won't run any longer. And he won't hide. He will stop being the hunted...and start doing some hunting of his own. Michael P. Spradlin's newest thriller is the ultimate game of cat and mouse set during one of the darkest moments in history.

This is another winner for a very talented author. I had know knowledge of what took place in Ukraine during World War II. Spradin somehow takes the Holocaust one the largest stains on humanity, and manages to both pay tribute to its victims yet at the same time, leave the reader with a sense of hope. The duel between Anton and Major von Dueseon is tense and suspenseful and just when I thought I had things figured out they went in a completely different direction. I highly recommend this book, not just for middle grade readers but for anyone with an interest in World War II, history, the Holocaust or if you just want to read a ripping good adventure yarn. Can't wait to see what he writes next.

Wonderful middle grade novel about how family, courage, love, and patience can overcome the evil of hatred and the destruction of war. This would be an excellent read-aloud in grades 5 & 6 for students who have some prior knowledge of World War II. It is written so well that you NEVER want to put it down once you begin reading. Thank you, Michael, for another great book!

The Enemy Above is a book that explores some darker themes about humanity and courage in the face of unrelenting evil. It is a taut, suspenseful thriller about one of the most horrific times in human history. Yet Spradin, still manages to leave the reader with a measure of hope. Highly recommended.
