Why is Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" so much a part of the Christmas season every year? Probably because the themes Dickens worked with- anger, sorrow, regret, the power of redemption -are nearly universal to the human experience and particularly enter our minds in the Christmas season."A Christmas Carol" is an supurb re-telling of Dickens tale by Patrick Stewart, one of the finer actors in Hollywood today. As much as this is Dickens story, this is Stewart's moment. Playing every character in the story, Stewart turns in a tour de force performance that leaves you desperately wanting more.Believe me, you won't be disappointed.
My family has listened to this recording every year since we bought it in 1998. My kids grew up with it, know most of it by heart and don't consider it Christmas unless they've heard it. Patrick Stewart is incredible as he performs the voices of all the characters, plus many of the sound effects. If you hear this recording and are not enthralled by it, I would have to question your sense of wonder or your appreciation for a magnificent performance and an enchanting story. Beautiful!
Just wanted to say I have seen almost all productions of A Christmas Carol and read it many times, but I bought this on CD and Patrick Stewart as narrator is as good as it gets. His beautiful accent, bold intonations where it's called for and delicate tones when the characters dictate make this feel like a play with a full cast. Fantastic. I usually sell or pass along my books on CD, but this one is a keeper to listen to around the fire for years to come.
Patrick Stewart gives the voice performance for the ages in this reissue of the original production that became a tradition in our home a quarter century ago. Only an actor of Stewart's sublime talent could achieve what he does in this beautifully done interpretation of Dicken's classic masterpiece. Perhaps you think you've seen this done far too many times and probably believe nothing more can be done with this, especially if you saw Jim Carey's super-odd animated abomination or been stunned by Mr. McGoo's version. There has been some good work done by many actors, from Reginald Owen to George C. Scott. The Muppets, with the superb assistance of Michael Caine, did a fantastic job. However, by leading the mind's eye through our own imaginations, Sir Patrick is an absolutely wondrous guide. Indeed, this is not simply one of the truly excellent Christmas Carol's, it also is one of the finest voice performances ever recorded. In a time when we are bombarded by visual stimulation constantly and radio dramas are all but forgotten, this would be a incredible introduction for young people to the world of personal imagination as a single voice enacts a story and the pictures originate in their minds. Stewart is masterful and each Christmas we celebrate his gift to us by listening as a family as he brings A Christmas Carol to life for us. Sadly, this might all be coming to an end as everyone texts, tweets, and instagrams and attention spans are measured in microseconds. For now, I live with the illusion that the old tradition continues and I am at peace with that. Sir Patrick Stewart is still part of my Christmas and is performance is mesmerizing as all the people in the Dicken's tale come to life in my imagination.
Everyone has their favorite version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Make this dramatic retelling yours. At about 2 hours, its perfect for listening in the car while running around during the holidays or on your MP3 player while putting up Christmas lights. I plan on listening to it every year from now on. Patrick Stewart gives voice to every character, including the narration, and gives the kind of performance which I have come to expect from an actor of his immense talents.
My family and I have loved this beloved Christmas story for years. When we first heard Patrick Stewart perform this one man show we were hooked. He does a fabulous job with each character, making the story come to life for us. We love it so much that we have been giving it out as Christmas gifts to friends and family.
I absolutely love this recording. Mr Stewart has such a distinctive voice and carries all the characters so well. I listened to this at least 3 times over the holidays, mostly driving to and from work and occasionally at work. It puts me in the holiday spirit......
I must have listened to fifty samples from "A Christmas Carol" audio CDs. Nothing compares to Patrick Stewart. His spoken voice is like a song; his enunciation and inflection are perfect; and his joy and mastery of this art, profound. What a gem! Thank you, thank you, thank you Patrick Stewart.
