This book is perfect for my beginning special needs 9 year old who is at least 2 years delayed. I think an average 4 -5 year old would be great with this. This book would not require any answer key as the instructions are very straight forward. Access to a piano is nice, but not necessarily required. This series is wonderful as there is a lot of review. The fly-leaf gives a clear idea of what is covered, and subsequent books spiral over old material. I've used this several times (with 5 kids) and have not been disappointed.
This music theory book teaches music theory as it relates to the piano. This took me by surprise. Nothing I read about this book indicated that fact. I am teaching the recorder, so would not have chosen this book had I known.
Theory Time is the only theory I use...it is clear, succinct, and gives several pages of work each time a new concept is introduced...they also have an excellent product for adult beginners that combines the 1st 3 books into one which is Theory Time: Medallion Series - Theory Fundamentals Comprehensive...sold here on
My son is 8 and has never played piano before. We also used a work book along with private lessons. He can now read notes!
Teaching Theory to my students is very important and these books prepare them is an easy, concise way that works for Theory Exams and preparation for future endeavors in music!
