William Booth: Soup, Soap And Salvation (Audiobook) (Christian Heroes: Then & Now)

Written for readers age 10 and up -- enjoyed by adults!William burst into the house. "I have found my destiny!" he shouted. "I have found a place where there is so much human misery in such a small space that there is a lifetime's worth of work there for me!"Horrified by the poverty and suffering most people took for granted in industrial England, William Booth dedicated his life to bringing the gospel to the outcasts of society who would never enter a church and weren't welcome there. At age fifteen William vowed, "God shall have all there is of William Booth," and not even resistance from the church and government, lack of financial support, or vicious attacks by angry mobs could stop him from spreading the light of the gospel through the streets of England. Today, all around the world, General William Booth's Salvation Army operates thousands of evangelistic and social service centers, changing countless lives with the love of God and the courage of their convictions.4 CDs, running time 5:02 hours, read by tim Gregory

This series of books is captivating! I enjoy them every bit as much as my children do. Even my nearly 14-year old son cannot put them down! We own about 4 of them now - but my children have requested the entire series. Little-by-little, hopefully we can do that for them! The books are exciting, moving, and are great faith-builders. The missionaries featured become heroes in the eyes of my children. I cannot recommend this series high enough. Hope you'll give it a try!

Even though I knew bits and pieces of William Booth's story - I found this a fascinating read!I was especially intrigued with how God began to shape his life by turning an amazing "find", into an opportunity to help a fellow student. It took a number of years for God to shape his heart into something He could use - but use it He did - worldwide!I recommend it heartily!

I have purchased so many of these "Heroes" titles and we have loved them all. We use them for family read alouds and then my daughter will re-read them again and again on her own. They are not boring at all. They include adventure, humor, and great character development.

At the age of 13, when his father lost all the family's money, William was sent to work for a pawnbroker. Here he saw how many folks were taken advantage of. In 1844, at the age of 15, William felt the call of God on his life, surrendered to Him and life was different from then on. However, it was not until two years later that William was able to do some real evangelism with the other boys in his Bible study class. Under the leadership of Bill Sansom, they went into the slums of Nottingham to share the gospel. Later, after finally convincing the new converts to attend church, William was disgusted to see how the congregation treated the newcomers. This was followed by a lecture from the Reverend Dunn: "...it is not appropriate to bring the riffraff off the streets andseat them beside us in our pews."What would William do? How could he work full-time as a preacher and support himself and later his family? Who did God use to provide for William? What role did Catherine, his wife play? How did the name Salvation Army come about? Find out the answers in this book! This is just one book in the amazing series Christian Heroes: Then and Now. Suitable for the whole family, we read this during family devotions. A very interesting story about a man who, like Jesus, saw worth in the downtrodden of his day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!William Booth - 1829 to 1912

We love the entire Audio Heroes series, but we found this one about the Salvation Army founder especially fascinating. These are great for long drives as they make the time fly by and they are very encouraging for any Christian.

I finished reading this book a few hours ago. I was eager to finish reading because this book got me, and I wanted to know all.We have one salvation army in my country, and reading this book helped me to understand and know the whole story behind them. This book also inspired me into put attention to what is needed and into do something about it. I also got surprised in his (William) passion for preaching without having much formal preparation. Finally, I should say that this is the second book I am reading of the authors, and when i was selecting this book, I remembererd how easy reading was the first one. This book is also easy reading, I love the author's writing's way.

WE love this series, and this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to know about the history of the Salvation Army. I had no idea what it was all about until I read this book with my kids. Great story.
