Financial Algebra by Gerver and Sgroi is alone in its field. It covers financial topics such as banking, checking, budgeting, mortgages, credit cards, auto insurance, investing and more using the algebra skills all high school students need to know. It reviews Algebra 1 by constantly applying those skills, and teaches selected topics form Algebra 2, Geometry, precalculus, Calculus and probability and statistics. There are projects for students to do outside the classroom, internet activities, and plenty of finance-related quotes to start each lesson. The model problems are great. There are tons of applications problems, and there is also an accompanying workbook with even more applications. This course should be a requirement for every high school student in the country. The book is the script for the course, and it very efficiently programs the entire curriculum.
I first encountered this book while in high school taking a Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications. For this class it was alright because you had the teacher to explain. When I began my freshman year in college I was again required to have this book. Everything changed. The lessons, are poorly written and described very little of the topic. Not to mention the examples. Half the time the examples had nothing to do with the subject of the lesson nor the chapter. If you can figure out that you have to flip around in the book to find what you're looking for, then yes this is a great book. If you have a professor willing to take the time and explain the lessons better and in more depth, then yes it's a great book. It's not worth the effort without either though.
Practical and relevant. This was a great purchase for me.
