I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Tao, the Cro-Magnon boy with a twisted foot. It is an inspiring account of primitive man, and shows how he moved from superstition and magic to common sense and knowledge. Tao is determined to draw and paint like a Chosen One and the revered Graybeard even though he is an orphan, and this is taboo. He also befriends a wolf and hunts in the forbidden lands which his clan considers evil even though it means he must live alone, away from his people. Denzel has written a great Stone Age story for middle schoolers with lots of action and suspense.
This was an intriguing story (a read-aloud in my classroom) that gave my students a taste of how early people lived--taboos, coming of age, difficult family issues, foreigners across the river, wisdom of the old, dealing with handicaps, courageous self-reliance are themes the students caught from this tale.
My sons art teacher had a copy of this book checked out from the library to read along side an art project of cave man art. We read it and really, really liked the story. Tao risks everything for the sake of art and is rewarded when the master teaches him his techniques. I learned ancient ways to make oils and various ways to apply them to bring the herds of game to the people.
This book was truly phenomenal! A joy to with hold. There were many parts that surprised me. You get to know one character so well or you get to get familiar with the book and then bam there is a twist. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick yet extraordinary read. The only part that I did not like was the author used wording from long ago, which was fine I just would have preferred to have something at the bottom of the page telling me what that word meant. But all-in-all I loved this book! 😃
Sent quickly. My daughter needed this book for school and was dreading reading it "because it looked SO boring." She ended up loving it and now claims it's one of her favorites ever. She is 11.
This short book follows Tao, the stone age boy with a limp who bucks tradition by daring to wish to be a cave painter (at which he has a real gift) rather than a hunter (at which he is very poor, until he enlists the help of a wolf-dog he befriends - and that just causes more problems). The book is an enchanting look at the ancient european cave painting hunter-gatherers of some 18,000 years ago. But it is also a book that speaks to anyone anywhere. Sometimes "this is the way it has always been" is just not a good enough answer for doing something the same way now, and Tao learns that those who dare to dream may sometimes be rewarded. This is a children's book. It is short and sweet and could be read by any child from the age of about 7 up. It lacks the tension of a good young adult title, so teens will perhaps stay away from this book, but it was still an enjoyable read.
Boy of the Painted Cave review I really don't know what to say other than that the book was the second best book I ever read the first one was The Wizard of Oz,nothing for me can beat that book its to good. Anyways usually I read a few pages of the book then I put it down because it is borring but I didn't with this book I read it all it was fantastic. And the great thing abot it is that it is so discriptave that you can visualze the whole story in your head. Also I think they should turn this book into a movie, it would be a good movie. But thats my opinion there are many more opinions out there so you don't have to go with mine.
