Unlike most engineering maths texts, this book does not assume a firm grasp of GCSE maths, and unlike low-level general maths texts, the content is tailored specifically to the needs of engineers. The result is a unique book written for engineering students that takes a starting point below GCSE level. Basic Engineering Mathematics is therefore ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, especially for those who find the theoretical side of mathematics difficult. Now in its fifth edition, Basic Engineering Mathematics is an established textbook that all students requiring a fundamental knowledge of mathematics of engineering with find essential reading. The content has been designed to meet the needs of students studying Level 2 courses, including GCSE Engineering, the Diploma, and BTEC First specifications. Level 3 students will also find this text to be a useful resource for getting to grips with essential mathematics concepts, because the compulsory topics in BTEC National and A Level Engineering courses are also fully addressed. John Bird’s approach is based on numerous worked examples, supported by 750 worked problems and 1550 further problems contained within exercises throughout the text. In addition, 14 revision tests are included at regular intervals. Ideal for use as tests or homework, full solutions to the revision tests are supplied on the accompanying instructor’s website.

Basic Engineering Mathematics is an excellent book for review or for those looking for a very well organized and step by step instruction in engineering math. The book is very easy to read through and can definitely be used as a supplement resource too. With that said, there is one flaw; The answer key possesses several incorrect answers here and there. I have broken down each problem as far as it could go to verify and I have had several engineers do the incorrect problems only to reach the same answer I reached. While unseemly, it does force you to look closely at every problem to make sure it is solved correctly.

Another reviewer has given this book 5 of 5 stars, yet still pointed out that the answer key has many wrong answers. That is exactly why I am giving the book 3 of 5 stars.Considering this is the fifth edition, I am very displeased to see the amount of errors in the answer key for the review exercises. Furthermore, I have contacted the publisher via their website to try to receive the teacher answer key for the revision tests, but have yet to hear back from them. It's a problematic system because I am using the book for self-study.That being said, it's a decent overview of basic mathematics necessary for preparation for an engineering program.

This is a horrible book to LEARN math. I started with little knowledge before I first began to book and I constantly find myself looking elsewhere to acutally learn the material. This book could better be titled "Engineering Math Problems". That would still make it a terrible book because, as was stated above, the answer key is often jumbled up.

ALTOUGH A BASIC BOOK ON MATHS FOR THOSE WITH A BACHELOR DEGREE OR A MASTERS A GOOD BOOK TO HAVE ON THE SHELF TO REFER TO WHEN THE MEMORY FAILS. EXCELLENT FOR STUDENTS JUST STARTING ENGINEERING STUDIES.

This is NOT a good book to learn maths with, the explanations of each topic are extremely brief and as another reviewer said, I ended up going elsewhere online to try and properly understand the subject. Many of the answers in the answer key are wrong, I would say at least 20% of them. This does not help when you have little confidence in maths, as i sat there for hours trying to work out what I was doing wrong, only for my maths tutor to come along and say I am right and the book is wrong!!If i could give this book minus stars I would, its going straight in the bin!!
