I love Michel Thomas' method. I've tried every other course out there and this gives you a feeling of instant gratification. The focus is on speaking. You don't need to read or write anything, just follow along on the audio recordings responding where indicated. Within the first hour and a half you are saying things like "I would like to know what you think of the economic and political situation in France right now." The learners in the recording laugh because it seems ludicrous that they can say these types of things so early in the learning process, but they do.By drawing parallels to the English language and strategic structuring (or scaffolding), along with some cleaver word associations, he has you effectively producing advanced sentences. You'll learn a great deal of vocabulary and walk away with a systematic way of using it. Highly recommended.Don't buy "Start French" if you are buying this package. The audio lessons from his "Start French" program are included in this "Total French" program. I bought both without realizing it.
Great instruction in pretty much every regard.Terrible, sloppy execution on CD. The CD naming does not match the labeling. As a result, there are redundant CD names so that Windows Media Player will over-write disk one when you load disk three which has "Disk 1" in the file name. It took hours for me to get the complete set ripped so I could listen on a portable player. Don't install this until you have plenty of time and patience.
I could have given the course 5 stars if the woman on the tape (with a beautiful voice!) was dropped altogether or would read the responses asked for, leaving only the gentleman to respond with his high level of success. I'm on disc #3 and it's been so painfully awkward and exceedingly unhelpful, even annoying, listening to her great struggle to respond accurately! Her many and varied errors and hesitations have kept me from easily forming my own feeble attempts to be as accurate as possible...thoughts are scrambled... Why on earth would anyone want to listen to the unique inaccuracies of someone else, even though trying their very best?! And then hear the teacher reprimanding the student when wrong!So it's tedious, mystifying, maddening but since it's past the return date and I paid my good money I'll wade through more discs. It would be a very fine program if only the poor responder were reading the correct responses from the booklet provided...I sincerely would like to hear from Mr. Thomas himself as to the reason for such a zany format!
Michel Thomas teaches two students on the audio. He gives a phrase in English, they say it in French, and he repeats the phrase one last time so the listener hears the final answer. My big problem is that he often MUMBLES the final answer, so I can't hear what he's saying . I'll have to listen to this with the volume turned up higher. As for playing it in your car: Don't bother! That's even worse. Otherwise the material is good, though not entirely useful while driving.
Absolutely incredible! I am the quintessential Made in the USA person. Languages have been a mystery to me. From high school classes that I retained till I took two steps out of the classroom, through all the years I've lived abroad with native speakers that would rather learn English than try to teach me one more butchered word of their tongue. I've tried taking classes, Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, Duolingo, Berlitz, and so very many more. Eventually I get lost, frustrated, and give up with utter exasperation.Michel Thomas is a true genius. How this is not the way everyone teaches, boggles my mind. It is so pure, simple, and organic. He sweeps away all the tedious mundane drudgery and goes right to the heart of the language itself. After only a 2 hours he has unveiled a vocabulary of a couple THOUSAND words in a very simple and clear ways, and how to use them so effortlessly; and all without any memorizing, taking notes, or boring assignments. It is the closest thing I have ever seen to true magic.Not only was a language simpleton like myself in awe of these programs, but my wife who has been a High School English teacher and speaks five languages fluently already, absolutely amazed and... slightly ticked off; because of the years she spent learning those languages. Thanks to Michel Thomas she will be upping that 5 to 6 to 7 to 8 and more in a fraction of the time it took her to learn one.
I switched to Total French after giving French Behind the Wheel a chance. French Behind the Wheel was fine but it was so incredibly boring I had to force myself to use it. With Total French, I look forward to my driving time because Michel French is so much fun and I'm speaking French in a way I never could before. The author uses an entirely new approach (at least for me) and it's actually fun. No, really!
I've recently completed the ENTIRE German course by Michel Thomas. The results are nothing short of incredible!(By the entire course I refer to all 'sub-courses': Start, Total, Perfect, Masterclass).At many points along the way there's a substantial sense of accomplishment. First, when finishing the first 2 hours of the course, you are already familiar with several sentence structures. By the end of the Total course, You reach a point where you have a solid grasp of basic to intermediate sentence structures, and by the end of the Perfect course you get a very firm grasp of all sentence structures in use, being able to both understand sentences in German, and construct your own, no matter how complex they may be.It took me around 70 hours of listening, spread over 3.5 months to finish the courses, mostly listening to the recordings while driving! By 70 hours I refer to the time I spent on the courses, which includes pausing the recordings, rewinding, etc. No homework was required, no extra work of any kind.Note, as you'll often read in reviews of the method, Michel's accent in the 4 languages he taught was far from native-like. However, this poses little to no problem. This is because he does put an emphasis on pronunciation key points, which, if mastered, allow you to be perfectly understood. To further help with pronunciation, on the segments that focus on vocabulary, you have native German speakers, who read in German the sentences you are asked to translate from English.So, in conclusion, I highly recommend courses by Michel Thomas!
