Here we have two recordings from 35 and forty three years ago that play as fresh now as then.I admit to finding The Crucible ever too grim and real to enter. Why watch this when we see it on the news every day? Cotton Mather travelling from Yale to torture and execute scared people who dared to dance, and to steal their farms under the cover of true faith; like a Yalie cheerleader invading Iraq as Opus Dei "a work of God" rather than the work of British Petroleum and Exxon. Thank God that's done with!You might also experience (I cannot say enjoy) this at The Crucible and study it more deeply at The Crucible (Viking Critical Library), anywhere but Ignatius (OMG).The main reason I purchased this set is for the 1965 Caedmon recording with, of course, Lee J. Cobb. Interesting here is Bernard as played by the pre-The Graduate Dustin Hoffman. Further interest lies in Hoffman's later interpretation of Willy Loman himself in Death of a Salesman/ Private Conversations, a much different reading than Cobb's but perhaps more real for our day, more tragic in a small man over-reaching, burned out.
