I first read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" way back in 1980, shortly after it had come out. At the time I was an aspiring writer who liked science fiction and had a quirky sense of humor and thought: "I can't believe it! This guy's written the novel I want to write - only he's done it better than I ever could have!" Since then, I've read the various other books that have come out, watched a TV version of it, and finally the movie version of it. There's nothing else quite like it, and it's filled with a galaxy filled with memorable and improbable humor!If you haven't met Zaphod Beeblebrox or Marvin the Paranoid Android, or the meaning to life, the universe, and everything, then this CD set would be a great way to experience them for yourselves.The TV version had such sorry props and a low-budget feel that it wasn't nearly as good as the book. The movie was better than the TV series, but still underwhelming.Just recently, on a long vacation car trip, I listened to the original BBC radio series for the first time. I thought, "Well I'll probably enjoy it more than the CDs on philosophy or World War II history that I'd contemplated. And I'll probably like it better than the lame TV series and disappointing movie, but I'd better not get my hopes up compared to the book."But I was wrong! If anything, these audio CDs are even better than the book. This is curious to me, because I learn, for example, much better by reading than by hearing and usually get much less out of a book on tape or CD than if I could read it for myself. But I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the audio CDs were at least as hilarious as the book.This got me to thinking further: why were the books and radio series so much better than the TV series or movie?
