Why does the pigeon want to drive the bus? Well, probably because the pigeon wants to. Why doesn't the bus driver want the pigeon to drive the autobus? Well, should pigeons really be driving buses? Probably not. Could their little wings reach the steering wheel and their little legs reach the brakes? Probably not. So the bus driver, or "el conductor" in this Spanish edition, likely has a good point when he tells readers to "¡No dejes que la Paloma conduzca el autobús!"Don't relent. The pigeon will tempt you into saying "¡sí!" The pigeon may offer lasting friendship: "Seré tu mejor amigo!" or offer a bribe: "¿Y si te doy cinco billetes?" But stand your ground. Tell the pigeon "¡no!" and see just how persistent desiring birds can be. Soon el conductor will return and re-establish harmony. That pretty much sums up this fun little book. The pigeon wants to drive the bus, but no one should let this happen. Don't let el conductor down. Absurdity still reigns in certain parts of the universe. Let's keep it that way.This little book translated into Spanish also provides a fun way to learn Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Those teaching children, or even adults teaching themselves, will have loads of absurd fun translating and reciting the pigeon's desperate pleas. Grammatically, the book stays within the simple present, past and future tenses, which serves beginners well. The vocabulary remains similarily basic throughout. Beginners may find themselves thrown by the alternate use of "manzana" in the sentence "¡Sólo una vuelta a la manzana!" Anyone with even basic Spanish skills probably knows "manzana" as "apple," but it can also mean "a group of houses" or "a block" as a dip in a dictionary will reveal.
