"The Mystery of King Tutankhamun," like Mr. Derby's first book ("The Ghost Memoirs of Robert Falcon Scott") paints the pictures for a young reader's imagination and takes them to another world. I remember books when I was a young reader that took me far from the small town in which I lived, to other worlds in which I could travel and escape into my imagination. This book about the young king Tutankhamun, does just that, takes the reader to another unfamiliar world, so that the reader might lose himself in the mystery of this ancient Egyptian world, brought back alive to the modern world in these pages, and perhaps to ready the young reader for the promise of mysteries yet to come.
This is a pacy read. Ken Derby has successfully combined what is sometimes dry, historical fact with intriguing mystery and the excitement of discovery . The chapters are just the right length to keep younger readers and listeners motivated and hooked as the expedition takes its course, and the ending becomes a starting point for discussion and debate about the curse of the tomb. The clever use of imagined dialogue adds the element of emotion. All in all a successful combination and a good read.
