When last we saw the Navel twins they had avoided being eaten by yaks. In this book, we must face cannibals ... and much much worse! Hilarious, heartfelt (at least when it comes to the wistfulness of loving television) and heart-stoppingly tense at times. We meet new heroes and new villains and we laugh the whole way.
I picked up the book to read Sunday night and I couldn't put it down, wound up getting no sleep and finishing it by the next night. The book reads with a fast pace; there's seldom a moment when there's not a bit of action coming. The story also operates as a mystery, leaving little clues as it goes and resulting in surprises as the book progresses. This is an excellent follow-up to the first book. It doesn't read as a second chapter, but stands alone and develops new and different tropes rather than repeating anything from the (excellent) first volume. Recommended for kids and recommended for anyone who likes children's literature. Five stars!
I have read this whole series with my daughter during 1st and 2nd grade. They are definitely content appropriate and so charming. I enjoyed reading these books and was excited for the next night when we could continue following the adventures of the twins who do not want to be explorers. The books cover great deal of mythology and geography which was a fun addition....from looking for the Lost Library of Alexandria, to the Yeti, to Atlantis, to Krakens....this is a fun read for kid and parent. Definitely recommended.
My grandson is absolutely "hooked" on this series. He will not put the book down. The book arrived a day later than expected but was in great condition. Would highly recommend this book to 9-12 years olds (but must say my 64 year old husband has enjoyed it also).
Equal parts funny, clever, and terrifying, "We Dine with Cannibals" is probably the only book I'd ever consider getting for a pre-teen that has the word "Cannibal" in the title. (That includes any Fine Young Cannibals album, by the way.)The books in the Accidental Adventures series--this is the second--tell the story of identical twins, who, as the title intimates, would much rather be watching adventure shows on TV than going on adventures themselves. But that wouldn't be nearly as much fun, and it wouldn't be an Accidental Adventure, where everything that can go wrong most often does.Bad for the twins, good for us. Almost every detail about this book is likeable, from the unexpected sidekick of a poisonous lizard who's almost always in the wrong place at the wrong time to the twins themselves, whose prodigious knowledge serves them well in unexpected situations. After yet another perilous situation is avoided because of some esoteric fact from a reality TV dancing program, you might find yourself wondering whether you should watch some "Jersey Shore" yourself. Don't. Read this book instead. It will make you laugh more, and you'll feel good about it, too.
I've read this series to my 8yr old son every night for the last few months. We both enjoy them. I appreciate the authors notes at the end of the book where he lets you know some really neat truths that are woven into the story. It's quite educational if you talk about and expand on the places the Navel twins go and the things they discover. There are lots of adventures and make believe, which make the pages fly by!
My two grandsons of age 10 and 11 were able to read these books themselves (I gave each also a second in the series). They laughed out loud at the fictional characters who'd had it up to HERE with their overly adventurous parents. Being at the age to start feeling a bit exasperated at their own parents, they enjoyed the premise as well as the lively, well-written stories. This author has a great imagination! I will keep watch for more to be published in America (I believe they're published first in England?) Christmas comes fast!
This book was really fun. I read it to my children (9 and 12), one chapter a night...sometimes we would sneak in a couple of chapters if it was really good. They both loved it and asked for the rest of the series.
