I bought this book for our grandsons, ages 8 and 10. Before gifting it to them, I read it. Glad I did. It is a good and faithful history told through the eyes of a fictional character. The book is well enough written that it conveys the history and sense of the time without becoming too dry and historical. Some parts of this Magellan story, which I recall from other reading, are pretty brutal. The author doesn't ignore the rough life and brutality of the 16th century, he just doesn't dwell upon it. The story advances without a lot of contemporary judgments. The story also has links to the present by pointing out that... in year's to come, this place became known as... for example. I hope the boys begin to appreciate history more as they read and ask questions about the Magellan story.
