I, the history scholar, am very impressed with this book. Jim O'Connor is a descendent of one of the men who died in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War of our great country. He took great work of condensing the three days of events into a very serious summation. You won't find better than this if you truly want to know what really happened with the battle of Gettysburg without having to read a long book about it. MR. O'Connor did an excellent job. You will not find a more brilliant summary that is directly to the point AND very involved action. Bravo to "What Was The Battle Of Gettysburg?" I could and will read this many times over. It is extraordinary and engaging.
I picked up a copy for my granddaughter. She is 10. I got to read it first because she was finishing up another book. I read it in about an hour. I actually couldn't put it down. It was a great history review, and simply enjoyable reading. She just finished it and enjoyed it also. We're thinking about visiting Gettysburg and looking up some of the sites mentioned in the book. This book is well written with excellent illustrations. I highly recommend it and my granddaughter thinks it's a great gift for 8-12 year old boys or girls.
Great educational series of books. Very fun for my nine year old. He mostly reads fiction but these books are easy to read and understand. This books covers the basics of The battle of Gettysburg so that a young reader can stay engaged. My son usually finishes these books in a day or two.
On the whole I found this book to be a judicious, well balanced book on Gettysburg. My 10 year old sons read it quite attentively. If you have fourth or fifth graders interested in history, I would recommend.
Just got my first three in this series, and my students have enjoyed all three. This series is similar to the Who Was/Who Is series that brings non-fiction to kids in an inviting way. Great for my fourth grade students.
My daughter needed this as a summer project, she was totally bummed that her school required that she read a book. She was very surprised that this book was very informative and funny. We definitely recommend this book for 4-6th graders. Great historical reading.
I bought this book to read with my grandsons, ages 9 and 7, prior to their family's vacation to Gettysburg. It really helped them become more informed and interested about the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg.
Bought for my 10 year old grandson prior to trip to Gettysburg. He got so much more knowing the history before seeing the monuments.
