The illustrations are truly the star of the show in this book - some have a two page spread with no accompanying text! Unfortunately, the rhyme itself - while simple and charming - isn't anything particularly special. In fact, the implementation of the poetry isn't consistent throughout this work - some 2 page spread dream lands have accompanying text and others don't which makes reading the "story" more difficult as cadence is broken.If you are simply looking for a book with illustrations to charm your children, this is it. I have been a fan of Emily's art well before having a little one. When she released this book I was so happy to be able to share her beautiful images with my daughter. We love this book not only for the beautiful illustrations, but the wonderful story as well. This would make a great gift for an expecting family or any little one in your life!
This is a sweet little bedtime book in a simple rhyming format, but the best thing about this book are the illustrations. I absolutely love them, so much so, in fact, that I am rethinking my plan of giving this book to my little granddaughter. Rather, I think it will remain in Grammom's library to be brought out when she visits. At three years of age, she is still a bit rough on books, especially since she wants to sleep with them. A board book version would be great as a second copy even though that format would not do the illustrations justice, I think. But it would certainly make it easier for me to convince my granddaughter that the original should remain with me. I think she is going to want to take this book home with her.
I loved seeing all of the precious, doll-like children in the magical settings, it has a wonderful feel which transports me to my childhood past where anything was possible. It also reminds me a bit of one of my favorite illustrators, Tasha Tudor, and I'm looking forward to collecting all of Emily's books as well. Sharing this lovely book with my children is a perfect way for me to encourage their imagination, as well as prepare them for a good night's sleep!
This is a wonderful whimsical story book for our three year old daughter. The storyline and illustrations are fantastic and very dreamlike.
I bought this book for my child's Teacher who is about to have her first child- the children are giving her books to start a child's library. This book is the perfect bedtime book- gorgeous, dreamy illustration that even very young children will love, sweet verses, and a not-too-long length :)
Beautiful book.The pictures and the prose are lovely - I feel calmed reading this, myself.The narwhal kinda came out of left field, though I haven't decided if I'm more annoyed by the need to explain an animal many adults aren't sure is real, or pleased that the author bucked all the easier (and arguably more enticing) choices of sea animals. Seahorses, dolphins, sea turtles, whales....nope. Narwhal.
Beautiful illustrations. I would have liked to see more content that would produce a story line instead of the options a child has of what he COULD dream of when he goes to bed. What is there is sweet and calming and perhaps that is the purpose of the book. Truly love the illustrations.
