In general, I don't get excited by workbooks. They're static, I've yet to see one that is way fun, and what do they really teach? However, this book allows your little learner to figure out an answer, redo a page, or create his or her own response. Telling time is not an easy concept for kids to learn, and many do not really get the abstract concept of time until they're 9 or 10. But this book helps a kid learn to recognize an analog clock, a digital clock, and written time. Priddy breaks down the concepts into little chunks per page: if the clock shows 10 o'clock, the child writes down "10 o'clock"; or if the words say 4 o'clock, the child draws the hands onto a clock. Then they get to practice what "one hour later" is. Then it's on to half past, quarter after, quarter 'til. Each page allows the child to practice over and over what those times are on the clock or in writing. Another page connects the child to "what time do you eat breakfast," or "what time do you go to school," allowing the child to think about what that time might look like and fill in the correct what is for them the correct time. The last page has blank clocks to fill in other important times for events of the day. This book gives excellent practice. The wipe-clean format is an awesome creative tool for this kind of book. If your child is ready to practice some basic concepts about time and is expressing an interest in time (Mommy, you said we'd go to the pool at 4:00. Is is 4:00?), then get this book. If you child isn't quite ready, then at least wait for the 5+ years recommendation on the cover. An excellent book; I am looking forward to purchasing the Simple Math and Simple Spelling books for my soon-to-be kindergartner--they look promising as practice books as well.
What a smart way to do it! This book definitely exceeded my expectations. My kindergartener and 2nd grader are both learning to tell time with this book. It's a really fun book with big, easy to read clocks and words, it's dry erase, which makes it fun (and easy to re-use). And it does a really good job of working through the steps of telling time: first a page on the hour hand where they both draw in the hands and where they read the hands and write in the time (7:00, 6:00) etc. Then it works on reading the minute hand, again having them both read the hands and write in the time, and also having them draw in the hands. It also has pages to work on things like :15, :30, :45 and teaches them the phrases that go with these (half past, quarter to, etc.). It even teaches them the words for times like "... past the hour" and "...to the hour. (i.e. 20 minutes to 9 ) though this is definitely a more advanced page that younger kids might not understand for a year or two. The book even has a page of practical application where it shows pictures of common things like eating breakfast, going to school, and going to bed and has the kids work on relating telling time to the things they do and gives them a place to write in the time on little clocks.I really can't rate this book highly enough. I bought a different time telling tool first (a Melissa and Doug Write-a-mat) but found this one to be way more fun, way more educational, and it has a lot more practical application because it works on each element of telling time separately. I'm sure we'll be using this through all of our kids. I would also highly recommend it for a teacher or classroom setting because it is sturdy and will last a long time.
I saw this book at a book store (for allot more money) so I got on and ordered it. I love that it has all levels of telling time from the hour, to half hour, ten minutes, five minutes, one minute, lots of practice for each one. It's great for kids of different grades and levels of learning.
This book is excellent for teaching time. I used it to teach my 5 year old. She understood the concepts easily and quickly. There is plenty of practice problems, and since this is used with a dry erase marker, I can use it over and over! It also teaches quarter past and quarter til, which can be very confusing for a child. Although my 6 year old has mastered telling time to the minute, I will later continue to use this when we come back to the "quarter" past and til concepts.
This book is a great tool for reinforcing time concepts, including half past the hour, quarter to, quarter past, minutes to and minutes past. Also includes a page for making up your own times. Use an erasable marker and wipe it off again and again for lots of practice. My first grader loved it!
