I have to preface this review with the fact that I did NOT buy this book for the story. The story is pretty basic and simple with both a Spanish and English text on every page describing the dia de los muertos traditions. I'm not rating for the story though. I am an art teacher and saw a lesson plan involving this book online so I purchased it to give the lesson a try. It was a huge success and I am so happy to have the illustrations from this book to use. They are gorgeous and colorful!
I don't know if I checked for the, "check inside this book," option or if that's even available anymore, but I wish it was and I should have. I wasn't too impressed with this. While it is very colorful, the writing is very simplistic and the translation isn't all that great, well, I guess it was but the material just wasn't that original to begin with. I don't feel it gave any history or help, just a basic, "we celebrate our ancestors, we put up an altar, and a couple other things." There you have it, other than the illustrations, that's pretty much the book, oh, and written in Spanish too...
As I was preparing to give a presentation on the holiday for my son's kindergarten class, I was relieved to find a children's book that makes the topic accessible and fun for kids. The Day of the Dead by Bob Barner lays enough of a foundation about Mexico's most unique holiday to pique the interest of uninitiated kids, and gives those who have been raised on these rituals something to be proud of. The illustrations are as cheerful and bright as the holiday itself, and Teresa Mlawer's translation (the book is in Spanish and English) is excellent.
This books is alright. The illustrations are really cute. I love the bright colors! The story however is not interesting at all. I'm an elementary art teacher, and I tried reading this with kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders. None of them were into it. It was a struggle to get through the book. I was excited about having a book in two languages, but the pacing was just off. The worst part was that the Spanish translation wasn't exactly the same as the English, and my English speaking students picked up on it. So, I would have to read the English text, read the Spanish, then say the Spanish again. The sentences are also really weirdly written. Overall, worth the $8 I spent for the pictures, but next year I'll be looking for a different book to read aloud. This is a dud.
This book is great for children. It is written so they can understand the idea easily. The pictures are nice and colorful and Not creepy at all (which can be of concern for small children). My four children all really liked it!
I just love this book. It has great colors and it very detailed story for all small children who do not understand DOD.
Beautiful book with wonderful illustrations! It gave a lovely, easy to understand explanation of the holiday and was perfect for the younger members of our family. I bought two I loved it so much!
I have other books about this cultural celebration but liked this version and it's dual language. A great resource for bilingual students!
