I bought this book for my kids to learn Chinese and although it has a significant amount of words in it, I am not very satisfied with the format. The Chinese characters are tiny, almost as if they wanted to hide them, while the English is large and in bold print. The Pinyin is bigger than the Chinese script and almost as big as the English but not in bold print. If I were given the opportunity to make this book over again, I would do the exact opposite! The whole point is to learn Chinese, not Pinyin and definitely not English. I am aware that non-native speakers need the Pinyin and I have nothing against it, but both the Pinyin and the English should be in small print and the Chinese script should be bold and large. Otherwise, I have found the book to have a broad vocabulary selection and decent enough drawings to convey what something is. I just think they made a huge mistake in not putting in very prominent Chinese characters so that kids can actually learn the Chinese script and not the foreign handicap way to read something.
Not only does this book have the photos and the English translation but it has the Chinese pronunciation in "pygn-english". It's easy as pie to read and follow. Though there are not to many phrases, it's a good book for the learning of nouns.
As both a teacher and an aunt of three children who were adopted from China (one of who spoke no English upon his arrival here), I can say that this book is a great multipurpose resource. Adults can use it to communicate with children and children can use it to communicate with adults. The pictures are the key to its usefulness. You can use it to teach young kids who speak English common Chinese words. You can use it to teach English to children who are Chinese. If you "google" it, you can find it, new, for 11.95 on another shopping website.
This was a gift for family friends who are adopting a nine year old from China. They are actually there today! He hasn't had an opportunity to use the book, but I hope they will find it helpful. Four stars because the pictures look like they are from a 1950s version.
This is a great picture dictionary! We have had it in the house for a long time and now my 6 year old takes it with him in the car and makes his own notes in it. It is great to have several picture dictionaries around so that your kids have a source to go to with a question. Great has pinyin which is essential for many new learners![...] site for parents raising bilingual kids!
Good vocabulary; however, the image quality is poor and selections are antiquated. They could have found better royalty-free images to illustrate the words. Some are so lo-res and others are hand drawn by somebody who has remedial drawing skills. Those who like the look of pre-computer and pre-digital image and layout -- here you go!
This book is beautifully illustrated and I'm hoping this will help my Chinese friend who is coming to America get a well-grounded introduction to the English language.
