I bought a variety of children's books in Chinese to help us teach our daughter Mandarin.Gordon & Li Li Count in Mandarin is a little different than what I expected. First of all, the first couple pages have this whole long thing introducing Gordon and Li Li (in only English)...but it doesn't seem to have much of anything to do with the rest of the book. That seemed kind of random.Then, the rest of the book goes through and counts objects. Each page has a number in English, and then it has the Chinese character for the number, pinyin, AND a pronunciation for English speakers. The pronunciation is helpful for those of us who don't read pinyin yet.The one thing I thought was kind of disappointing was that the items are not labeled in Chinese at all. It's ONLY counting, not counting objects. So, on the 3 page, it has 3 rock guitars...but it just says 3. It would have been kind of fun to learn the extra words that went along with the items pictured. Also, this book counts to 20 and then counts by 10s the rest of the way to 100...with small children, 60, 70, 80, and 90 objects all look pretty similar.Aside from the pronunciation, the thing that I like best is that the pictures seem really modern. The selection of English/Mandarin kids books out there seems to be pretty limited, and they typically don't have really modern, exciting pictures. The pictures in this book are really fun.Even though I would have done this book a little differently, I'm giving this 5 stars because the pronunciations and exciting pictures really make it a fun book. I'm sure we will be buying the other Gordon and Li Li books for our daughter. I recommend this book especially for English speakers that want to share a Chinese children's book with a young child.
