I just want to start off by saying how much I LOVE Nora Roberts. Jewels of the Sun was the first "real" book I ever read after finishing with things like Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, etc... and here I am exactly 10 years later and I still count down the days until her next book comes out so I can buy it immediately. She is the reason I became a writer.I've noticed something in the past couple years, however, and that's that Nora Roberts has somehow fallen into this writing pattern that she just can't seem to get out of. A lot of authors discover a formula that seems to work for them and tend to stick with it and there's nothing wrong with that. Nora just seems to be following that pattern way too closely. Woman (very rarely a man) gets scorned, set up for the "main story line", she/he forced to go home and find solace in family, meet a guy (girl), fall in love, a bit more about the actual story line, quirky secondary characters, couple has a problem that's easily solved, climax to the main problem, couple resolves all of their issues and then the end.Now, I have absolutely no problem with happy endings. In fact, I love happy endings. It's just that the happy endings in Nora Roberts' stories aren't always so plausible anymore.In The Liar, Shelby's husband dies and leaves her with a child and massive debt. She finds out he was a lying, cheating bastard and she goes home back to her family to recover and quickly meets a man and falls in love, picks herself up, yadda yadda, predictable ending and they all live happily ever after. It was all very predictable and I knew exactly what was going to happen before I even read the first line.

No suspense. It was obvious from first chapters how this story was going to end. Combination of the movie "Charade" and Mary Higgins Clark's book "Before I Say Goodbye" which was done much better with probably 200 less pages. Another reviewer commented on the dialogue not defining the characters, which I totally agree with. When a group of the woman held a conversation (same with the men), it was hard to tell which character was speaking. The love angle and scenes were boring, same old, same old from many of her previous books. The hero Griffin (Or insert Bo, Finn, Gull etc) is the same guy we've met before in her books. Unruly hair to his collar, a swagger, a "fixer" who falls instantly in "lust" etc. Meh! A lot more I could comment on why I didn't like this book but why bother? I wasted enough time reading it. Would not recommend wasting yours!That paragraph I wrote after reading and giving a 2 star review. However, after recently reading a few of Ms Roberts older books, I had to change my opinion to 1 star. For same reasons, but more so! I had forgotten how enthralling her books could be, giving you the feeling you were THERE. This book is an absolute failure. Never felt I knew any of the characters and worse, MsRoberts didn't even try to flesh them out with her endless, meaningless dialogue. Another reviewer commented on how quickly that whiny Shelby recovered from her horrible 1st marriage. Agreed! There is something terribly wrong with a woman who lives with a controlling monster for 5yrs, but after 3months is ready to marry a man she barely knew??? Oh please!Now I don't know if will allow this but I'd like to comment on most of the 4 and 5 star reviewers.
