*****SPOILERS***PLEASE DON'T READ AHEAD IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS, I'M NOT HOLDING BACK*****I couldn't decide if I wanted to give this book 3 or 4 stars. I want to say 4 because I am a longtime fan of Nora Roberts and I was really excited for this book. I think I'm going to end up giving it a 3 though because it just didn't live up. NR's last few books have been incredibly disappointing but, when I read the excerpt of this one, I really thought she'd gotten some of her magic back. She didn't write in those weird, short, choppy sentences she seems to love these days, the characters were a delight, the premise was interesting, and, once again, a great setting. I don't mind, at all, her habit of writing 3 men, 3 women, 3 books. It's just something she prefers and I kind of like it. The predictability of the ending and the events don't bother me one bit. I know that the good guys are always going to win and three couples are going to fall in love. I did speak too soon, however, about the magic coming back because most of the things I was looking forward to were the things that killed it.Setting: The setting was absolutely gorgeous, but, in the past, Nora has described a setting so beautifully with about a 1/4 of the words she used here. I get it, Villa is beautiful and Greece is beautiful and food is delicious. Say it and move on. I really didn't want sooo much of it. She spent more time developing the setting than she did the characters and I had to skim most of it. Now, in the next 2 books, there are going to be 2 new settings and we're going to have to endure brand new descriptions of them all over again. You're writing a book, Nora, not a travel brochure.
Even with some similarities to other Nora Roberts characters (regarding some of the personalities), I found the plot of the first book in The Guardians trilogy: interesting, mysterious, and unique.'Stars of Fortune' introduces us to Sasha. A loner artist who's always had dreams and premonitions: a seer. One day she decides to leave her life in North Carolina and travel to Corfi, where she meets the five people she's been watching in dreams and painting for a while.Sasha along with Bran, Riley, Sawyer, Annika (my fav!), and Doyle make six; the chosen ones who will be in charge of finding three stars before the evil force does and destroys the world. Good thing, each of these characters has a unique power and hidden identity that will make them even stronger along with the trust they have to build among them, and of course, love. The beginning was incredibly confusing. I had no idea what was going on or why these people were agreeing so matter of factly to living together. Fortunately, it didn't take long to understand their motives and mission. I loved how it all evolved. I especially enjoyed trying to guess each of their powers and identities, which I'm not revealing because part of the enjoyment of reading this book is to find out at the same time they do.What I didn't like much was the main romance between Sasha and Bran. They had cute moments but also others where they absolutely bored me. Never felt sparks flying or had that AHA! moment when I fall in love with the couple.Maybe I got tired of Bran needing to constantly assure Sasha she wasn't weak while Sasha would constantly tell herself she was. Maybe I got annoyed with a couple of her overreactions. Maybe I didn't feel they got to know each other past their powers and identities.
