This is such a great book and a perfect blend of scary tension and cuteness. As you're reading the fun rhyming story to your child, there is always a spooky sound before the reveal of the monster. Kids can guess what horrible creature is lurking behind the corner. But the thing is, the monsters are so cute!!! But they're not cutie-pie cute, they're monster cute. I love the dirty texture of the art - it gives the book it's dark, spooky feel, but the fun expressions on the characters make this book sweet enough for little kids. The rhyme is fun, the art is great - a lovely picture book for the kiddos.

My Daughter absolutely loves this book! she first found it at the library. Then we bought this one for her and she loves it even more with the flaps. She now has it memorized and "reads it" to us. She adores the pictures

I loved this book for my 3.5 yr old son, who at the time I purchased this was getting scared of the dark and of "monsters." This book shows the various "scary" characters getting scared themselves. It showed that "monsters" can be vulnerable. And my son had me read it over and over again.

Grades K-2This simple counting book has clean, nice looking illustrations. The pages are not cluttered and the five Halloween themed characters are well drawn and colorful. Children will like them. (The ghost on the cover looks a bit like a Pac-Man Ghost.) The book is a counting book, but the numbers are not shown on the pages and I wish they were. It seems like they were supposed to be, there's plenty of clean space on the page for them. The numbers are written in word form on the pages but it would be even better if the numerical number was there as well. The book does not mention the word Halloween which is nice because it won't offend anyone. The characters are clearly Halloween themed making it perfect for October but there is no mention of Halloween, no Jack-o-Lanterns and no trick or treating which is just fine. This is a simple counting story with a funny ending, the human boy scares away the spooky, creepy characters. It also counts backward from five to zero at the end as the creatures flee the house and the boy.One side note, there is also a picture book titled Ghosts in the House which is a cute book to read in October! I read it to my students every year in the library.

Combine a little counting (up to five) with this lift-the-flap book that also focuses on the denizens of a haunted house. Plenty of surprises await the young reader behind the flaps on these pages and along the way the bouncy rhythm of the text makes for a fun read aloud story. It is not too scary so you won't have to worry about nightmares plus the ending is good for a couple of chuckles. This book would make a nice Halloween treat for your child or grandchild.

This is an excellent kids book, and our pre-schooler asks us to read it six or seven times in a row, every day. Some things that make it great:-It has a nice rhythm read aloud and the stanzas rhyme. It's very enjoyable to read and hear read.-The story repeats a simple structure, with a twist on the very last repetition. Kids love that.-Whenever the story introduces a new monster, you get the monster's sound first, then turn the page to see the monster. It's a mini surprise, and it's fun for our kid to shout out her "guess" about what's waiting on the next page.-Counting! Works that educational component in without being obvious about it.-The monsters are very cute and not too scary for kids.
