You just can't go wrong with a children's book by Eric Carle. His bold, colorful illustrations make his books so attractive and eye-catching to a child. I am especially fond of the board books that are so popular now. The big print is also another positive aspect for a young child. Eric Carle's books also provide excellent learning opportunities for the younger set. His books are just so good that I aspire to collect them all! They can be used so many different ways.
We check out books at the library before purchasing any to see which ones my 11 month old daughter actually likes. She loves this one and always selects it to take home. I don't care much for the split page (that's why I'm giving it only 4 stars) but when I make the sound written down and match it with the animal it always makes her laugh. She has a short attention span so board books with long sentences are not as interesting at this point. Definitely looking forwarding to adding this to her permanent collection.
This book is not up to the usual level of cleverness you'd expect from Eric Carle. The split page format might b good for a intermediate reader but for a toddler the format of mixing and matching written animal sounds with pictures of animals is strange.
I purchased this for my sister as a gift. I absolutely love Eric Carle and I felt that this book, "Animal Sounds." has many different ways and uses to be able to teach and engage your child. The book is much like a matching game, thus the pages are split and this may initially feel awkward, but I believe overtime you will grow accustom to this. I think this book is a must for any child's library.
