My daughter and I LOVE Karen Katz's books, but I was a bit disappointed with this one. It's a very simple story, which is good for a baby, but it's lacking in the touch-and-feel department. The items to touch are somewhat small, and aren't so obvious to the baby. My daughter is 8 months old and can usually find the items to touch easily. Not so with this book. There was one page that I first thought didn't have a texture on it, it was so hard to find. Also, one of the pages had the same exact bear with fur on it that was on the cover. It was the same thing repeated. Not so exciting for baby. I just think this could have had more things to touch. That being said, though, it's still a cute book and baby will like it, if your baby likes the other Karen Katz books.
My book-loving toddler will sit for this story, but she doesn't really do the touch-and-feel with it, mainly because there are so few things to touch. The cover of the book has a fuzzy tummy for the bear, there's a small corduroy pocket on the first page, a puffy duck wing, and a raised flower pattern on the last. The shiny "decals" on the book the character reads don't stand out to her...she barely noticed them (as did I). She'll pull this out as a bedtime choice now and then, but it doesn't stand out to her. It's okay...and that's about it.
I should have paid more attention to the descriptions and the fact that this wasn't one of Karen Katz's lift-the-flap books. I was pretty disappointed because we LOVE the flap books. This is a cute touch-and-feel book but I just won't reach for it like I do the flap books. It has all the great illustrations as all her books, but I wish it was touch and feel AND flaps.
I ordered this book for my toddlers for Christmas, and it is such a sweet book. I like that it has the touch-and-feel feature instead of all the flaps usually found in Karen Katz's books -- helps the book last longer. Can't wait to make this one a part of our bedtime routine!
This book has colorful illustrations and is simple and easy to read to a younger child. My only gripe is the lack of textures and touch and feel opportunities. One page features a duck with a small patch on it to feel, but the texture is on the left page and my toddler rarely ever notices it. Another page isn't really touch and feel because it features a holographic type of paper as the "texture". I dislike books who use this as a touch and feel feature because while it can catch the eye, it really doesn't feel any different from the regular pages of the book and offers no sensory touch experience.The book is very simple and short, which can be good for the younger kids, but it lacks the touch and feel experience I expect out of a touch and feel book.
I bought these and several books for my grandson, and loves them. He likes the touchy feely ones. He pull out the book that he wants his mommy or daddy to read to him. he just loves these books.
My grandson (19 months old) ADORES these books.they are board books with flaps to open on each page. That said, he does require some supervision as the flaps do tear if handled roughly
I read this book to my 10 month old often before bed. She enjoys the textures, there's not too many to get her too hyper. The writing is soothing and sweet.
