This is an excellent course for a beginner and a great value product. With a coursebook, 4 cd's and a dictionary, I don't think you'll find a better course for the price. There is plenty for the beginner to start with, and enough vocabulary, phrases and grammar to help lay a foundation for future study.The coursebook begins with pronunciation practice, especially important in French. The alphabet, common vocabulary, cognates and the most easy to remember and useful vocabulary are focused on first. Bolded vocabulary is included in the audio so the learner can associate the written language with the spoken, and use the native speakers as a model for their own accent.The course then gets into common sayings, dialogues, greetings and useful phrases and slowly introduces grammatical concepts. Word order, verb tenses, and other rules of grammar are all explained in small batches throughout the course. Only the essentials are here, though. If you want a lot of grammar you'll have to look somewhere else. This is the basics only, but a good foundation for further study or preparation for some intrepid conversation for the bold adventurer.The third part of this package is the dictionary, which goes beyond what is used in the course. It is valuable during the course, but is most valuable after the course, when the learner wants to continue adding to vocabulary. The learner can begin to use vocabulary most relevant to their own needs, and apply them with the basic knowledge gained from the course.The combination of a basic coursebook designed for the beginner, the audio that is so important in French, and the dictionary for continued self-study make this a very well-rounded course for the beginner.
