This is part of an instructional program for children learning English for the first time. It is not a dictionary for children who already speak English. It is very valuable, especially when used with the accompanying storybooks and educational activity packets.
Joan Ross Keyes was on the forefront of ESL education. She had a Master's Degree and taught ESL from Kindergarten age up to and including Adults. When she started teaching, her classes were non-English speaking from a multitude of countries ( French, Italian, Polish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese etc) all thrown in together in one class. There were no teaching materials available as it was an entirely new frontier. So, armed with her passion for teaching, coupled with her passion for writing, she developed and implemented her own. Her Author Association with Oxford University Press resulted in this phenomenal and unique teaching tool that has set the precedent for all others. She was instrumental in her developing a creative and clever set of fundamentals and skills all brought together in the Oxford Picture Dictionary for Kids. It works well for any age and has been a great teaching tool for Adults as well.
As a teacher of English Language Learners, I find this to be an indispensable part of my classroom library. My 4th graders LOVE this picture dictionary as it allows them to participate in the general curriculum because of the thematic layout: Community, At Home, Continents, Animals, etc. I used to have 16 of these, but now I'm down to 2...the disappearance being a testament to the utility and fun this book provides for my students.
This is a great book for children learning the english language. I am a teacher and we use this book with english language learning students. I just bought this book for a friend who is adopting a 3yr. old from another country this summer to help her in communicating with her and to help her learn the language. Students use this book to communicate with teachers and friends by pointing out pictures of words they want to say. When a student has something that they want to say that is not in the book, we determine what it is and then add a post it note in the book on the correct page so that they can find the word again when needed. For example, one student wanted to say "mittens" but in the book on the Winter page it only had "gloves". We drew a small picture of mittens on a post it and wrote the word and stuck it on that page next to "gloves". Another example is "recess". We wrote that word out and put it on the page where "playground" was. We use sticky page markers on the edges of pages so students begin to learn where things are in the book and can turn to them more easily. Students also use this book during writing workshop to help them write the words they want to say. I highly reccomend this book.
