This is a set of language lessons, not a phrase book or video. It is designed by people who actually know how to teach languages, for people who actually want to learn French, not just memorize a few phrases. It is easy to listen to a travel phrase CD and think you speak French, but an honest evaluation by a native speaker will prove otherwise. This is a real language course for serious students.I studied German for 5 years in high school and college, so I am familiar with what one needs to actually learn a language adequately.The set consists of a beginner book, an intermediate book, a dictionary and 8 CDs. Basically, the course consists of excellent printed lessons with audio pronunciation guides.This set of lessons starts out with pronunciation exercises that are well designed. The first lesson consists of words you are probably familiar with -- first names -- so you can see how French pronunciation differs from English. The names are spoken on the CD and notes in the book clarify basic principles. Then they give you a list of cognate words to practice (with audio). That is, their teaching method in this lesson is to contrast and compare words to get you off to a good start on pronunciation. An excellent way to learn.The course lessons are very easy to follow. Every word on the audio CD is printed in the book in bold. Explanations in the book are in regular type. They break the lessons up in to 1-4 page units on very specific topics. They start off with vocabulary that I find useful--words you need for conversation, restaurants, getting directions, etc.
