As a note, this is the second set in the study group. Don't start with this set. You need to start with Thomas French Total, then move to Thomas French Perfect, and then to Thomas French Masterclass.After studying 5 languages - Latin, Spanish, German, Italian, and now French, I can definitely say that you should start with Michel Thomas to learn French. If had started out in a traditional class listening to someone reading French while looking at the words, I would probably have pulled my hair out! The spoken words in most cases look nothing like the written words, even after taking other languages. Except for the consonants, C,R,F, and L, most other final consonants in words are not pronounced. Then the French take a normally unpronounced final consonant and not only pronounce it, but stick it on the front of the next word if it starts with a vowel or an always unpronounced H. On top of that, they run words together and don't pronounce entire syllables and even words in some of the most common expressions. But with Michel, even though he tells you what it is, and explains it, what you learn is the way to speak like a Frenchman. He has a fairly strong accent, but it only takes a little while to get used to it, but it's a lot better to learn from someone who grew up speaking the language and knows all the tricks that to learn how to pronounce French from a non-native speaker who learned it from another non-native speaker.Given that, it is obvious that Michel Thomas is excellent for learning conversational French and how to actually communicate well in a French speaking country. Even if you are wanting to learn French for some competency exam, I would still start with Michel and then add books, aides, and possibly classes after that.
