Book was picked by a 5th grader as part of a mentor/student activity. We both loved it. The story is well detailed without overwhelming the young reader, and as the adult, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the illustrations. I particularly liked the underlying theme that Mandela stood firm for what he believed in, a lesson demonstrated to him by his father and practiced throughout his life. Very inspirational.
I am involved in an on-line tutoring program for kids who need extra help with reading comprehension. This was one of the books we read this year, and I would highly recommend it to children and adults alike. I was vaguely aware of who Nelson Mandela was, and remember the news when he was finally released from prison. Had no idea what kind of early life he had and what he represented. This is a must-read for history buffs!
This is a well written and beautifully illustrated picture book biography for young readers about Nelson Mandela, Civil Rights Leader and first elected black President of South Africa. This would be a wonderful addition to any grade school library or classroom.
