A mystery, vistas, camels, a sandstorm, and dinosaurs...what more could a young dreamer want? The Gobi Desert, Mongolia: "A land of secrets, " says Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews. He's talking in his jovial way to Walter Granger, a paleontologist, and George Olsen, their assistant, a young man whose surprising discovery made scientific history. Andrews led five expeditions across the Gobi for the American Museum of Natural History. This book chronicles those of 1922 and 1923, when he took with him some twenty men and an unlikely fleet of cars as an alternative to the more traditional camels. Originally expected to unearth signs that man had originated in Asia, these explorations stumbled across an unexpected find. And George did the stumbling-down the Flaming Cliffs near Shabarakh Usu, where dinosaurs roamed eighty million years ago. The find was a delicate egg, heavy as stone now and the answer to an old mystery: Dinosaurs were not born; they were hatched! A route map, a time line, crisp text, and breathtaking pictures present the sequence and excitement of bone-finding and preserving in the field for young readers eighty million years later.

In his book _All About Dinosaurs_ (1959), Roy Chapman Andrews devotes considerable attention to the expedition that he and Dr. Walter Granger led into Mongolia in the early 1920s. Andrews convinced sponsors at the American Museum of Natural History that Mongolia was a likely site for prehistoric human fossils. Nothing of that sort ever turned up. But Mongolia proved to be a treasure trove of dinosaur fossils and the the first fossilized dinosaur eggs ever discovered.Brian Floca's _Dinosaurs at the Ends of the Earth_ (2000) is a slightly fictionalized account of the Gobi expedition that casts a sharp eye on Andrews' strengths and weaknesses. On the one hand, he could plan an expedition well, and he could deal well with bandits. But on the other hand, he was reckless and destructive with fossils. Even today, paleontologists speak of certain fossils that have been "Chapmanized" beyond repair.I like children's science books that are well illustrated, and this book has handsome illustrations by the author. There is a lovely map of the expedition, with the routes well traced. There are spectacular scenes from the desert adventure in the yellow and red Gobi Desert. And there are reconstructions of various Mongolian dinosaurs: Velociraptor, Oviraptor, and (of course) Protocerotops andrewsi.

I can't recommend it enough! Get it for all your children! The pictures are very detailed and realistic, and the maps are excellent.

A short/medium story of an archeological dig. I'd say for 3rd graders. pictures aren't all that interestingBut okay too
