I'm an adult, learning German and I felt a fun book like this with pictures to help me remember the nouns would be a lot easier to learn from than just plain text to read.It is that, it's good to see the picture and associate that along with the English meaning. The problem is on a few occassions (about 3) the articles were wrong. The book said the noun was a 'der' when it was a 'die' and so forth. This was huge to me because when learning German nouns, you must know the right article in order to use them in sentences correctly.

WE moved to Germany and knew nothing about the language. My five year old (and his parents) have learned a great deal of vocabulary from this book. My son and his German friend use it to help each other out. We, the parents, use it because of it's user-friendly pronunciation key and quick alphabetical guide in the back!

I bought this book on a lark for my (then) 1-year old since we decided to teach her my mother's native language. Now at 16-months, she really enjoys looking at the illustrations. It is cleverly designed with individual images along the page edges and one large picture incorporating all the smaller ones. They're thoughtfully done by "scenes": in the classroom, at the airport, in the grocery store, etc.Excellent resource for anyone but especially the younger set!

I used to teach German on the high school and college levels and occasionally teach a special "German for Kids" course in my local public library. I've always found picture dictionaries useful and, for many students, probably THE best way to master vocabulary. This book, designed for young children, is likely to be a good tool for language learners of all ages. That said, for my own teaching, I would probably NOT incorporate the book into actual class instruction. As a supplement, I would likely recommend it to SOME students (visual learners mostly and/or the children of parents who already had a pretty good command of German themselves). The colorful illustrations are effective, but very "busy." They're ideal for a parent who might be raising a child bi-lingually and who could have the child touch, point and describe the action(s) illustrated in the lively drawings that accompany the book. But that's probably not the target audience for this book.As said, the book could also be quite a good supplement, however. I've recommended it to students who were doing well in the classroom and wanted just such a guide to enhance their vocabulary. Even then, I had to point out the pronunciation guide in the back of the book (and in a few cases, review the conventions the editors use to illustrate phonetic distinctions between German and English). And like all dictionaries of any sort, there is little grammar information provided (aside from grammatical gender). Students will learn the standard forms in the nominative case (and usually only in the singular) but will have to turn elsewhere for reinforcement with the three other cases. Plural And German syntax will need to be reinforced either in the classroom or with other texts. As one of many tools at a learner's disposal, this lively book certainly can come in handy. Good for starters, but don't stop there.

This is a book for children. It discussed child's things. That said, those basic words are words that I need and can use as well. I have had a lot of success learning German using Rosetta Stone's TOTALe product, which runs in total immersion and based on photos and pictures. And so I went searching around looking for German English Bilingual Visual Dictionary (DK Visual Dictionaries) and when I found this I bought this one, too -- and it is a joy to look through and read. I can't wait for the vocab to catch up with me on Rosetta Stone so I bought this one in the hope that I could learn some of the words that I might well use every day were I to know the words. And, I don't really like books of vocab -- I like associating images with German meaning, not English words. So, I bought this book and love the book and love to share the book, too, because it is fun to bring folks into my current hobby: learning German.

I am trying to learn German with my goddaughter - So I purchased this book for her (or both of us LOL) It isn't so bad - she is picking up a lot quite fast. Madchen-Girl. She is able to speak a little too and when we went to the grocery store she pointed out things in German - it was so cute. A lady asked me if she was from German - she had the lady fooled. So it is helpful - it won't teach you how to read/write/speak perfect German but is a great starting place for children and their instructors on trying to learn the language. :)

There are errors in the text. (A baby carriage is not a Sportwagon!) In other places, the word is translated technically correct, but not in the most common or accurate manner. "Yard" for example is translated correctly, but is not the word people would use to describe a homeowner's yard, the most common use of theterm.

Have bought many of these books for my handicapped daughter. She loves learning new languages. These last her for, usually, more than one year. I know they would last longer under regular use but, she uses them often, and due to her limited abilities with her hands, she is very rough on them.
