John Bunyan could be said to have authored the most influential book in the English language (other than the King James Bible) - The Pilgrim's Progress. But he has also written another dramatic allegorical novel - The Holy War. Bunyan's plan for his readers was for them to experience the struggles of the city of Mansoul as a fierce battle rages to take control of it. However, alongside this knife-edge drama Bunyan wished his readers to understand how the struggles of their souls ran in parallel to the struggles of the wretched inhabitants of that place.The righteous and honourable ruler Shaddai and his son Immanuel rule Mansoul with justice and equity. But the ruler of darkness - Prince Diabolus - has other plans. With his evil captains and their battalions Diabolus plots the fall and destruction of the once happy city. The first to fall is Captain Resistance as Diabolus knows that there is only one route into the city and that it can only be breached through the permission of the people of Mansoul itself. With Captain Resistance gone, the city is laid open to Diabolic lies and the next to fall is Lord Innocency and then the city is lost.So begins a story of treachery and deceit, foolishness and pride, forgiveness and final redemption. In fact this is, as Bunyan intended it, the story of a sinner saved by the grace of God.

Although I have read this book numerous times before, and had given it away to someone in need, I still enjoyed it immensely.I heartely recommend this book to any born-again Christian who enjoys reading good conservative literary material. However, I recommend that the reader be quite knowledgable on the Bible because John Bunyan has used allegories to describe the war that goes on in every human: the war between God and Satan over the human soul. If you, dear reader, have ever read "Pil-grim's Progress" by John Bunyan, then you'll understand the necessity for being up on your Bible knowledge. John Bunyan did not write these books to be entertaining, he wrote them with the purpose of being spiritually helpful in understanding what every believer goes through. I myself am a born-again believer since 1975. There is a great deal of literary "junk-food" that tries to pass as being Christian, but is as shallow as a child's wading pool. The "Holy War" is more than "meat and potatoes", it could be considered "gourmet" reading for a mature and hungry Christian soul.
John Bunyan produced a real classic when he penned this allegorical story. I doubt if anyone will believe me if I place it one step ahead of his other writings which I have read. The plot is easy to follow, the characters are easily identified, and the story line is fast moving. If you are a John Bunyan fan, and you do not have this one on your libary shelf, you are missing the best of the best.
John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress is a classic book, an allegory all should read. My 8 year old son greatly enjoyed reading Dangerous Journey, an adaptation of Pilgrims Progress for children. I was so happy to find this allegory, The Holy War, also by John Bunyan. Came in excellent condition, wonderful artwork. Will be a Christmas present.
This is worth every dime and then some. Not because of anything special with the printing or graphics, although they are great. The book itself is a true classic and worthy for everyone in life to read.
John Bunyan never disappoints ! Another incredible journey that opens ones mind to viewing our life in an incredibly different way.
As with his other book, "Pilgrims Progress", this book is outstanding. Outside of the Bible itself, I am hard pressed to read any finer literature that fully brings about the ability to visualize the Scriptures and the circumstances of life as you walk through and experience every level of your walk with God. John Bunyan fully gives you the ability to "see" things in a finite way that expresses the infinite. If you want to be able to visualize the characteristics of the many different aspects of life, then this is the book that you want, along with "Pilgrims Progress", its sequel "Christiana", and "The Life and Death of Mr. Badman". These four books are similar in the way they are written and Bunyan's imaginative text brings out practical and necessary lessons that everyone needs to know in such a way that you can visualize every element of character that you meet within your Christian walk.
This was a fantastic book. Loved all of the extras in the back. John Bunyan, in my opinion, needs no words to explain his work... he speaks for himself.
John Bunyan's other Masterpiece, if you liked Pilgrim's Progress, you like this. It is among my very favorite books, I have bought multiple copies to give as gifts.
