This was a nice book about a man immersed in alcoholism and despair, who comes to a renewed confidence that God is his only help and still has good for him in spite of the past tragedies that mar his life.Pros ----strong Christian message--not PRISSY(not afraid to look at reality), but ALSO doesn't force us to wallow in ugliness--there were moments in the friendship between Clay and Katie that I found really touching and sweet--he loves his daughter a lot and is (mostly) a good father--there were nice moments with his sister--Clay is humble and willing to learn...eventually...--it was pretty easy to readCons ---- the language can be incredibly awkward at times, and there were many times I flinched--the pacing could be rather abrupt -- SUDDENLY things happened, which I suppose was intended to increase tension or drama -- but I just found it unbelievable at worst and startling at best--some of the character development I found very weak -- I just didn't feel a lot of it--I thought the use of first person for Clay was unfortunate. I think what might have worked for me in third person, in terms of a rather stark style, was the source of confusion for me -- I just wasn't FEELING most of his feelings...hardly ever.--I personally had confusion/moral doubts about the whole divorce/potential remarriage thing, treated (frankly) without much thought at all -- and when Clay had multiple decisions to make on this matter...I couldn't figure out that he EVEN CONSIDERED that God might NOT want him to remarry. Might not. The issue wasn't addressed.Honestly, I appreciated the gift of being able to read this book (free, for an honest review), but I wasn't really sure I liked it.
