The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Solitary and solemn, it is the table where no one will ever sit. As a special gift to her Uncle John, Katie and her sisters are asked to help set the white table for dinner. As their mother explains the significance of each item placed on the table Katie comes to understand and appreciate the depth of sacrifice that her uncle, and each member of the Armed Forces and their families, may be called to give. It was just a little white table... but it felt as big as America when we helped Mama put each item on it and she told us why it was so important. "We use a Small Table, girls," she explained first, "to show one soldier's lonely battle against many. We cover it with a White Cloth to honor a soldier's pure heart when he answers his country's call to duty." "We place a Lemon Slice and Grains of Salt on a plate to show a captive soldier's bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return," she continued."We push an Empty Chair to the table for the missing soldiers who are not here..." The first time I read this book I almost cried! It is a beautifully written and illustrated book that explains the little known tradition of the POW/MIA table in words that a child can understand. I bought one for my son, and will now purchase another for my God Children.

This is an excellent book to share with children the holidays of Veterans' Day and/or Memorial Day. It illustrates the personal and family involvement very well. An excellent book for teachers!

I absolutely loved this book. I had originally heard about it at a conference for history teachers. I had been looking for a kid to teenage friendly book that helped students understand the importance of our military. I read this book to my 6,7,and 8th grade classes, and we were all moved by the story. We set up a table honoring our veterans at our school's Veterans' Day Assembly. I highly recommend this book for teachers or parents who want to educate their kids on a wonderful way to honor and remember our veterans.

Excellent book for children AND adults, explaining a touching memorial to our military who have made so many sacrifices for our freedom.

This is a great way to teach children about the importance of our veterans and the reverence they deserve. I use this in my first grade classroom. We actually set up a white table and ate lunch in the room on Veteran's Day. It was a great experience and I am very happy to own this book to use year after year.

Well illustrated, well written, to the point, meaningful, heartfelt, and helpful regarding one way Americans can remember their Prisoners of War and Missing in Action on Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day (Note: Memorial Day [last Monday in May each year] is for remembering those who have died in military service while fighting for America's freedom; Veterans Day [weekday closest to November 11 each year] is for saying thank you to those who were in military service and fought for that same freedom and are currently living. Prisoners of War or those Missing in Action can be persons in military service who have died or are still living.).America's White Table

I am using this as a reference. Being a member of both the VFW and American Legion, I want to learn about the traditions and the ways to remember our POW/MIA's. There are several different ways to set up a POW/MIA table according to the internet and this is just one way to present it to our youth so they can understand and learn respect for our veterans.

This book was written for families with POWs and/or MIAs, but also works for anyone with a loved one serving overseas. It's a tradition celebrated on Veteran's Day. I purchased this book to use for a Children's Story for the Church of the Brethren. As our church believes in Negotiation over Aggression, I needed to modify the symbols, leaving out the lemon, for instance, to make it fit for all the loved ones we've lost over the years. (And I used it as a reference, rather than read it to a group of wiggly kids.) It's a very moving book.
