I'll start by telling you that I was an after-school caregiver/tutor and a substitute teacher, before becoming a homeschooling mom. This is an excellent book! My son is 8 years old, but an advanced learner. I was so happy to find something that was for 4-5th grade because that's exactly where he's at with his studies! The everyday speed drills have really improved how quickly he performs multiplication problems, and because they're on every page: he PLANS-ON and ENJOYS testing himself everyday! And I'll admit: I have never been a math genius (yes, that means I've been the exact opposite! LOL), but even I've learned all the things I never understood when I was a kid trying to learn math! I love working out fractions!!One warning: if your child answers something incorrectly according to the answers in back, you may want to work the problem out for yourself, just to be sure. I have found a few wrong answers in back, of which I've already emailed the publisher. But don't let that deter you: it's an excellent program and I can't wait to purchase other books from this series! Hmm..."Word Problems"...LOL
Excellent book. Not only daily review, and work on number facts, but also lots of problem solving. A new topic is developed in each short daily lesson. A special section called "Helpful Hints" is excellent for students as well as parents. I like the way the book is set up in chapters. My son finally understands concepts he struggled with so much with his "regular" school textbook. All the important topics are included. Wholes, fractions, decimals, %'s, integers, geometry, basic algebra, number theory, graphing, problem solving galore, and much more...If your 4th or 5th grader is struggling in math, they need this book. A confidence booster for those who are doing well.
Thank you Richard Fisher for this well written math program. My 4th and 2nd grader have been using Book One with the DVD for the last couple of months. Richard presents the material on DVD in such a clear manner that the boys are easily successful with the workbook pages. We watch the DVD segment twice first copying down the work and the second time just listening. Richards manner in the DVD is positive, respectful and encouraging. My boys really like him. The daily review and speed drills are highly effective in keeping the knowledge in longterm memory. My 4th grader is dyslexic and we struggled tremendously with Houghton Mifflin's 4th grade text. MEMS workbook format is perfect for those who are slowed down with copying a copious number of problems from a text. Currently we have covered much more material in 2 months with MEMS then we did in the whole beginning of the school year AND the boys have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I have tried several math approaches in homeschooling and this is by far the most successful. Richard, have you thought of marketing more to homeschoolers as many of our friends have not heard of your work and I cannot do it single-handedly?
This book lives up to its title. My 4th grade son has always struggled with math. That is until we started using this book. The lessons are short with excellent, easy-to follow instruction for each new topic. The daily review has really made a difference, also. I wish I had this book for my other two boys when they were in 4th or 5th grade. My question is, why don't they have more books like these in our schools. The kids would sure learn a lot more. This book gets an A++.
I had always been bad at math, when I was younger. Now as an adult going back to school I have some entry exams. This book has just been the light switch that turned My light bulb in my head On.I have realized that I am not bad at math , just had teachers who never knew how to teach it very well. When I use this book and the online free tutoring videos, I actually learn and feel good about finally understanding what I am supposed to do.I tried other math books but wasnt doing well. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs some help with math or even for the person who thought they couldnt do math but have exams or other need for mastering math.Every page is written clearly and at the back of this book you will find the answers to every practice by its specific page.We all learn in different ways , but no matter how we reach our goal it feels good to know that this book could be that one.
I am a self-proclaimed math illiterate and a fractions idiot. My poor teachers way-back-when used take alka-seltzer after a session and a B on a test was a chance for great praise. Now that my daughter is getting into math more complicated than adding and subtracting, I needed something to help me help her. I read this book and suddenly a lighbulb went on. I could actually understand the concept of fractions and adding and multiplying and common denominators. It had all been a murky mess before. This book is clear and concise with examples and a chance to practice. I highly recommend it!
I have a daughter who went to public school through third grade before we began homeschooling. The way math was taught in public school was confusing to her. When I would attempt to teach her at home with her homework, using the methods that have been used for hundreds of years, she would cry and say that her teacher says that's the wrong way. In a teacher conference her teacher even expressed frustration saying that with common core, they were expected to teach children using concepts that didn't make sense and only made math more confusing than it should be. The "Old Way" what most of us know as the "Normal Way" is no longer acceptable in public schools.Once we began homeschooling we spent two years struggling to un-learn what she had been taught in math. We finally found this book. She was able to zip through it very quickly because the instruction is so clear and concise. She started this book with the idea that she was to forget everything she had ever learned in math and only do what she was taught in this book. She just did a standardized test after being homeschooled for 3 1/2 years (We are not required to test but I was curious how we were doing). She had previously struggled to be on grade level (5th grade, we repeated 3rd). She just tested on the 10th grade level in Math!!! I am so relieved! We will be starting the next book soon.My son, who has autism spectrum disorder and has never been to public school, (2nd grader) is starting this book now. He has had no problem understanding any of the lessons so far.
