My son has just finished first grade and at his school they actually do math one grade up. I could tell he was struggling wi some of the addition facts and so I ordered this book as a fun thing to do this summer. The Good: This is a very inviting way to present the material to children. My son was very eager to get started on it and math is not always his favorite subject. In fact I had planned to do a page or two each day and on his first day he finished 25 pages. It took him a good amount of time and wasn't overly easy but you could tell some of the pictures were making the concepts click for him. He was also having a lot of fun with it.The bad: Once you hit about page 36 you jump in skill level to 30 addition facts of a wide variety (doubles, doubles plus ones, oddball facts, etc). This continues for quite a few pages. There really isn't a good segue into this and they don't cover each different set of addition topics previously. For my son he was able to finish but again, he is already done with first grade and in fact a 2nd grade level in math. I'm not sure such a jump in subject matter would be good for an entering first grader unless they've mastered all their math facts already.Overall if you are using this as a supplement I think it's really great. I personally wouldn't use it to introduce new concepts but rather to enhance the teaching of them. I will definitely buy more of these.

My 6 year old really likes this book. We homeschool and I was looking for something to use as a filler in Math. Although he's never seen the show, he does love Star Wars so this was perfect. The boy willing sits down and does Math Facts just because there are Star Wars characters on it. It is common core aligned, but since its just a supplement for us, we skip the pages that lean that way. Because he loved his so much, I had to get his 3 year old brother 2 of the preschool ones and they love doing their workbooks together. My next purchase will be 2nd Grade Reading to supplement over the summer.

We actually have all the Kindergarten and 1st grade books at our house. My eldest son is going into the second grade, but I wanted to keep him fresh during the summer months. This was a great review for him. The start of the book was pretty basic for him, but it was still good for him to remember all those terms that he will be using in class soon. My youngest is going into Kindergarten, and he was able to do a lot of the Kindergarten aged books. When they started getting into writing whole sentences, he did struggle a little. My boys love Star Wars, so this was a great series that motivated my boys to want to work. My youngest wanted to do his "work" off and on all day. If you are not a Star Wars fan, you may have a few issues with name pronunciations and fill in the blanks. Other than that, this is a great series of workbooks.

This whole line is a godsend. We homeschool our 6yo. All I have to do is lay out his work for the day and most days he will have it done before I'm even awake - he knows when it's done we can do fun science projects or go out and about. He is such an eager learner and a fan of this franchise that it isn't "homework." We have had parts of the series after we purchased them at a comic con a week after they were released. He can blow through the majority of common core standards for 1st grade and is really pushing through 2nd grade. It's made my life easier. We even donated some to a teacher friends classroom and she hasn't stopped raving about them.Only complaint I wish there were more, more topics more exercises, more everything.I would recommend if you are homeschooling or just practicing with your little learner make a digital copy of the blank page because my guy has wanted to do them multiple times if he didn't get everything perfect.

I bought this to help my kids bridge the gap between kindergarten and 1st grade so that they would not forget everything over this summer. They get a real kick out of the activities and it has gone over real well in our house. One of the selling points for me is that it is Common Core aligned so I know what they see in this book they will see in school next year. When they MAP test in the fall I will be very curious to see the results. One thing is that the book assumes your child has already been introduced to the skill. If that is not the case I recommend that you head over to Khan Academy and work through the skill with your child and then use the workbook to asses their understanding of it.We do one page each day and it is helping me identify any gaps in their knowledge so when they do get to 1st grade this fall they will be well prepared. Just yesterday i realized that one of my kids keeps writing his 5s backwards. Now we will work on that until he masters the skill. They cannot wait to do the activities so i think that this book is a hit!The one thing that i found misleading about this book is that the front says "Aligns With National Common Core Standards." The Common Core is NOT a national standard, it was actually created by a consortium of states and has not been adopted by all the states, there are a few that have created their own standards.
