This was a very depressing book for the first 44%, as it concentrated heavily on the self-centred, self-pitying complaining of Katherine. Not at all edifying :-/ It improved a bit after that, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do the stories from Grace Livingston Hill. There were a lot of spelling errors that should have been adjusted with the proof reading, too. And the short story at the end would have been better omitted. Not a book I'll be reading again. I've returned it for a refund.
This would be a 5-star book - as I love just about everything Grace Livingston-Hill wrote - except for the fact that it is NOT a novel, but a short story, part of the Christian Endeavor series. I am unfamiliar with this series and chose KY as the first to read, only to find it doesn't come close to being novel, or even novella size. Apparently - and I speculate because I now hesitate to purchase any more of the series - all the Christian Endeavor stories are short stories. There are two problems I have with this:1. These stories are far too short to cost $2.99 each, and should instead be included (at a greater price, of course) in a set - ALL of them.2. Much to my surprise, a silly, rather stupid "Fairy Story" written by Who Knows, was tacked on the end. Less than 10 chapters, most of them 1-2 pages long (one chapter had ONE sentence!), was this supposed to make my hard-earned $2.99 purchase worth the price?Much as I love my Kindle, if I keep coming upon these ridiculous "add-ons" and short (VERY short) "novels", I will have to put my Paperwhite in storage. In fact, I think I just may renew my library card and head for the "L" aisle. . .
Once again Mrs. Hill captured my imagination as she led me through the plot and sub-plots of this wonderful book. Again, she used the same theme that is in all her books, and again, I found it refreshing and inspiring. I have been reading and re-reading her books for over fifty years, and I still find them most enjoyable.
It's amazing, though not offensive, how she always manages to have her characters Born Again. It's also amazing how she could write so many stories in one lifetime. And she always leaves her readers happy, if a little mystified.
Very old-fashioned. No profanity, no immoraity (except by the really bad people, and you know immediately who they are), and you know it's going to turn out OK, and the right people always marry the right people. Also, Grace Livingston Hill loved to do low-cost makeovers on places and people. If you want graphic sex and foul language, read something else.
