I generally like the You Choose series of books and the children enjoy them also. The Salem Witch book, however, is not for younger children. In one chapter the a child has to choose to turn in his mother as a witch. The school librarian read this book also and said it was not appropriate for younger (4th grade and below) children.
I'm giving this five stars because my kids liked it so much they went back and re-read it so they could make different choices. I did the same thing myself.Another reviewer mentioned that this book wasn't appropriate for smaller kids because one option was for a child to turn in (or testify against, I can't remember) its mother. My kids didn't take that path initially, but when they later wanted to see the outcome of every situation, they had to. (And aren't you be better off knowing that you have a little turncoat in your house?)It's a great series for learning about history and the consequences of different choices. The books are not long but there is enough information in the various scenarios to spark children's imaginations. They are by no means comprehensive, but this is a great way to get children 8-11+ interested in history - by involving them.I also bought the Underground Railroad version, and that was a hit, too. (And again, my children avoided the revolting choice of being a slave catcher...)
Readers never get a 'happy ending' and although I know it was rare for that to occur, from what know, some were cleared or escaped. I feel the author didn't do as much research as they should have although what they're included was good.
My 9 year old daughter couldn't put it down and revisits it regularly. Highly recommend. She actually lost the book and saved up to buy herself another. She loves to read it to me while we are on trips and I get to choose what direction the story goes. Lots of fun!
I like how you can pick a path and witness first hand by putting yourself in the characters shoes on what it was like during the salem witch trials. I also like choose your adventure books which is what this is.
