Women In Tech: Take Your Career To The Next Level With Practical Advice And Inspiring Stories
ebooks Download

Geared toward women who are considering getting into tech, or those already in a tech job who want to take their career to the next level, this book combines practical career advice and inspiring personal stories from successful female tech professionals Brianna Wu (founder, Giant Spacekat), Angie Chang (founder, Women 2.0), Keren Elazari (TED speaker and cybersecurity expert), Katie Cunningham (Python educator and developer), Miah Johnson (senior systems administrator), Kristin Toth Smith (tech executive and inventor), and Kamilah Taylor (mobile and social developer).   Written by a female startup CEO and featuring a host of other successful contributors, this book will help dismantle the unconscious social bias against women in the tech industry. Readers will learn:·      The secrets of salary negotiation ·      The best format for tech resumes ·       How to ace a tech interview ·       The perks of both contracting (W-9) and salaried full-time work ·       The secrets of mentorship ·       How to start your own company ·       And much moreBonus content: Perfect for its audience of hackers and coders, the book contains puzzles and code, created as love letters to women in the tech industry. A distinguished anonymous contributor created the Python code for the cover of the book (ghosted in gloss on the hardcover jacket, and also printed on one of the first pages). It references the mother of computer science, Ada Lovelace. Run the code to see what it does! Mike Selinker and Gaby Weidling of Lone Shark Games, and cryptographer and DefCon puzzle master Ryan “LostboY” Clarke created an “easter egg” of puzzles throughout the book - readers who decipher the puzzles get a prize from the author!

Got this book as a gift, and I wish I had read it 10 years ago. I'm more than equipped for the demands of my job, but deeply unprepared for all of the surrounding bulls*** that gets tacked on because of my genitalia. After an awful experience at my last job, I was so burned out I was considering quitting the industry entirely, but this book gives me hope. It's ridiculously practical and mercifully spare with feel-good "just be yourself" sort of advice and instead provides excellent, actionable, researched tips about resumes, interviews, which jobs to take, and which ones you should just leave. If I'd had this book earlier, I would have left the last job a long time ago. It's reassuring, on the one hand, that there is a way to navigate the tech world as a woman, and that other people have experienced the same things and succeeded despite it. On the other hand, it's depressing to read my experiences mirrored in other people's stories. It's not a personal failing of mine, it's not that I'm not good enough in some obscure way, even though often it's easier to believe that somehow, it is "your fault", because deep down, you still want to believe the world is fair and you can get ahead on merit alone. You can't. Your energy and time is limited and you're there to code, not to hold hands and teach an office of men that rape isn't funny and doing a team lunch at a strip club isn't appropriate. I've been perfectly happy to meet managers and coworkers halfway and help them figure out how to work with this strange female species, but there is a lot out there that it just isn't possible to change and sometimes you need to walk away, quickly. There are much better places out there, and I've worked at a few of them, and my hope is renewed I can find a good place again.
