I lost my job in 2011 unexpectedly, from a career I never thought I would be working in. I was on the hunt for a new job, not really sure where it would lead me. I ended up getting a job at a local steel distributor and got assigned to their (small) machine shop (with no previous experience).Knowing how to read blueprints is pretty much the golden tool in machining. From day one I had no clue where to begin when it came to the blueprints, I learned a little from my trainer and the other machinists. The company offers a six week blueprint reading course and the course uses Warren Hammer's "Blueprint Reading Basics" (3rd edition) as its main teaching tool. The guide has 14 chapters, that start off with Chapter 1. The Basics of Manufacturing Prints to what is probably the most difficult one, Chapter 13. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Each chapter has a one to two page chapter review, about 10 to 15 questions. Followed by several pages of worksheets where you put what you just learned to use. All of the chapter questions and worksheet answers are in the back of the book, allowing you to check your work.I found the material explained in a rather easy to comprehend way. This book is very, very basic (as the name indicates). It will not make you a expert blueprint reader, but it will give you enough base line knowledge to get a job or pass a entry level blueprint reading test for a job.As anyone who uses blueprints in their job will tell you, every different company and type of industry does things a little different, but knowing the basics of blueprints will help you learn their way that much quicker. I would highly recommend the guide for beginners wanting to learn.
This book is geared toward mechanical prints and covers the basic blueprint reading principles. It is a good buy for a person starting in a machine shop where they will be seeing a lot of prints.I bought it hoping it could outline some more advanced drafting principles like welding symbols. It does briefly cover these and most everyday aspects of blueprint reading, however only in a very basic sense. On the other hand, it does guide one through all the principles and help one to remember them through exercises. But it is for absolute beginners only; those just starting to study Drafting or those wishing to learn how to read shop prints. For those it is a good start.
I loved this book. For someone beginning the quest for mechanical and engineering knowledge, this is just the right book to start with. The ability to read blue prints in critical to any similar pursuit. I will be attempting to learn CAD/CAM or Pro/E next and this will make a fantastic foundation. Thank you Warren Hammer.
This is a excellent basic book on print reading. It uses easy to understand examples and enforces what you are studying with chapter questions. I have used this book at work to bring associates up to speed on the basics. An excellent book for the money.
The explanations are outstanding, but I would enjoy a few less work pages and a few more reference pages/cheat sheets. Also, it wouldn't hurt to have some color photos.I realize color photos make the book more costly to purchase, but for a topic like this I enjoy having some color to it.Nevertheless this is a good book for a beginner, it can just be a little "bare bones" at times.
The volume covers the basics of blueprint reading and includes most common drawing types. Good starter book for the beginning shop technician.
This textbook covers all Blueprint reading techniques very well. This book is easy to read and understandThere are questions for students at the end of each chapter.Fast shipment and packed well.
There are not many books that go over blue print reading for manufactured parts. We use it for training because there are examples and questions to test yourself with. We also use it for a reference guide.
