I was surprised to see two bad reviews before mine. I have used this curriculum as a student in my Spanish class and have taught from it as well. With any curriculum, you should have a Spanish-English dictionary handy (or use wordreference.com or other online dictionaries). I do like to skip around with this book, but it's a fine curriculum as long as you have a dictionary (which you do, as long as you have internet) and is especially good with a teacher or class.
I have been surprised to see the negative reviews on this product. I have used this book in teaching spanish both in classrooms use and in tutoring. I have found it interesting, attractive, and organized in it's way of teaching. I really like the reference charts in the back. I tried another more popular High School Spanish course, but I am back to Bob Jones. And, yes, each student will need a dictionary.
The book gives numerous illustrations. However, frequently illustrative sentences are presented Using grammatical structure or vocabulary word that the students have not been exposed to. That's discouraging to the students.
This introductory Spanish book is highly frustrating as it does not have an English-Spanish index in the back of the book (only Spanish to English). Also, the vocabulary words throughout the book are never translated. Might be a great book if you know Spanish already, but not if you're really trying to learn it!
I have used this book (both I and II) for two years as a teacher in a Christian school. The first year book is adequate but frustrating for students because of in consistancy of vocabulary translation within each lesson and the lexicon in back of book is virtually useless. The second year book is a nightmare-
When one buys a used text/school book, one gets a (hopefully) used book. Not pristine but serviceable. A case of you get what you pay for.
