Engaging account of the life of children in ancient Sparta, where patriotism, heroism, and strength in battle are the highest ideals. We discover how at age seven boys leave home to live in company with 15 others, training to be Spartan soldiers through rigorous physical and mental exercises. In addition to wrestling, running, and throwing the discus, we watch them foraging for their food, gathering reeds for their bedding, singing patriotic songs, and eating at mess with their elders. Emphasis is on the true nobility and rugged simplicity of the Spartan character. Suitable for ages 8 and up.

This book is an interesting read about life in Sparta. It is a chapter book written as a story but full of historical information about how the ancients lived. We've been enjoying it as a supplement to our study of Ancient Greece and my girls always ask for another chapter.

My 7YO enjoys this story and has learned a lot about life in ancient Sparta, as well as its relationship with Athens, how they viewed luxuries as a culture, and social concepts they embraced that are outside our own paradigm. This text does a good job of providing a basic understanding of Sparta and its values without including anything really graphic or questionable, so it's good for younger readers.

We are learning about Greek history in school and I think this book helps you to get a real look at what life was like for a boy in Sparta. It is interesting and fun. There are some strange facts in here that I didn't know before...like about foraging, which is pretty much stealing that is encouraged!

I am reading this to my son and we are enjoying it. It is an interesting way to learn the culture of ancient Sparta.

Our boys (6&8) love this book!!!
