This is definitely one of the best living books on Ancient Egypt that my kids (12 and 8) have ever read. This surprises me only because I've never before seen this book recommended in homeschool catalogs or any curriculum before, although we enjoy books by this author. This story was a quick read, about 90 pages, and the story was SO exciting. I read it out loud to my kids and didn't want to stop! It takes place in the rule of Akhenaten, just before King Tut. The story is about an Egyptian boy whose father makes frequent trips to Nubia, buying and taming wild animals before returning to Egypt and selling the animals. The boy's younger brother is blind, and their mother is dead. Through a series of events at the beginning of the book, the boys end working for the pharaoh Akhenaten. Akhenaten begins implementing laws to make Egypt monotheistic, which deeply disturbs the boys' father, who holds traditional polytheistic beliefs. This sets the tone for the rest of the storyline. While the book is a quick read, many, many details are added in about life at the time. It's one of the best books we've read on this subject/time period. My kids are in an appropriate age range for the book. It does include a lot of Egyptian mythology, and because of this, I'm glad that I chose to read it out loud. This edition is out of print; I found it at my library.
