I'm assuming most of the people commenting and rating this highly don't know much about the history of the Holocaust in Poland. While I like the series fine, this book twists the historical timeline incredibly. The children in August 1944 recall the Nazi invasion the year before? In 1943? Four years after the actual invasion? By 1943, we are a year past the deportation of the Jews of Warsaw to Treblinka. By the time she has Poland invaded by the Nazis, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising has already happened. Virtually every other ghetto in Eastern Europe has already been sent to its death by the summer of 1943. The children's father, if he'd managed to miraculously survived, would not be wondering if they could just comply with the Nazi invaders and survive--the answer would have been blisteringly obvious. By 1944, when the children are still alive, there was only one ghetto left really, and that was Lodz, and the 70000 survivors there were on the verge of deportation to Auschwitz themselves. I guess she had to make it 1944, so the Russians would show up and save everyone, but realistically, the timeline here is just unbelievably awful in light of the real timeline of the Holocaust. If you want to hand your child a book about the Holocaust that isn't too distressing, don't go with this one. It's dreadful. Go with one of the classics like "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" or "The Upstairs Room" or "Number the Stars."

As we move farther and farther away from the horrors of World War II, it's vital that our children learn from history if we're going to prevent the atrocities from happening again. This book brings the War to life without scaring children, and leads to in-depth discussions. It's perfect for grandparents who are only a generation removed, as they share history with the next generation.

My son absolutely loves this series of "I survived " he always wants more books and tells us about them in great detail the excitement that these books bring out of him is awesome. Well written and we look forward to new ones as they come out.

What a terrible anti-Polish propaganda! There were no Polish ghettos for God's sake! There were German ones! There was no Polish state since 1939, September. Poland was INVADED by German Nazis and Polish people had no role in creating concentration camps or ghettos, in fact, many Polish people were killed in those, Poland lost 6 millions citizens there! The book talks about the Nazis, but does not say they were GERMANS. This is so very wrong. Also, there is no other nation, that saved so many Jews, as the Polish people. No other nation received so many Righteous Among the Nations of the World Medals, awarded by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem for saving a life of a Jewish person. Keep in mind that hiding and helping a Jew was punishable by death to your whole family! Shame on the author of that garbage!

There used to be a game show called “To Tell The Truth” in which 3 people claimed to be someone with an interesting story in their background. 1 of them actually was that person, while the other 2 were imposters. It was the job of 4 celebrity panelists to determine which was the correct person by questioning the 3. In one episode, the panelists were dealing with someone attempting to expose American Nazis. After the questioning, the first celebrity simply said, “I will not make a game out of this horrible subject,” and refused to identify her selection. How do you discuss the Holocaust with children? How do you turn one of the most horrific events of the 20th century – or of ANY century – into an action story?Congratulations to author Lauren Tarshis, who admits in her post-story notes to asking herself the same questions. Readers of the “I Survived” series requested a book dealing with the Holocaust, and eventually, Ms. Tarshis found a way to deal with the topic. Rather than focusing on someone in the death camps, she had her young protagonists meet up with the Partisans. The partisans were loosely confederated small bands of freedom fighters who undertook small “hit and run” missions against the Nazi oppressors. On the Eastern Front of the War in Europe, most of those partisans were Jewish; as the tale is set in Poland, so are our protagonists.I will not describe the plot in greater detail than the above – there is no need for a spoiler. I WILL heap an incredible amount of praise upon the author for finding a way to address an event that included the horror of the death – the MURDER - of millions of non-combatants in her I SURVIVED series. A way that stayed true to historical facts without oversimplifying them.RATING: 4 ½ stars, rounded up to 5 stars where half stars are not permitted.

I work in a K-5 elementary library and have bought all the "I Survived..." books for my elementary boys - though plenty of girls have also enjoyed them. They love the "true story line", the fast pace of the books, and the fact that they are small chapter books. This is a high interest series that caters wonderfully to those reluctant readers.

I would give this a five star without even thinking about it. It is an amazing book and teaches yes a little bit about the Nazi invasion
